The Pharmacy Department plays a vital role in patient care by managing medication distribution, ward stock, and pharmaceutical records. The Messenger (Pharmacy) position ensures that medication and essential documents are transferred accurately and on time within the hospital.


Key Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:

  • Standard / Grade 10 certificate or
  • National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 2
  • Basic literacy skills, including the ability to read and write
  • Basic communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Basic record‑keeping skills
  • Time management skills and the ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Physical ability to move boxes and pharmacy stock safely

No previous hospital work experience is required, making this an excellent entry‑level government job opportunity in the healthcare sector.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for a range of essential pharmacy support tasks, including but not limited to:

Pharmacy and Ward Support

  • Collecting patient files from hospital wards and various units and delivering them to the pharmacy according to a scheduled timetable or as requested
  • Delivering pharmacy stock to wards, including ward stock, vacuities, and medicine packets
  • Ensuring accurate and timely movement of medication and documents within the hospital

Record Keeping and Administration

  • Maintaining accurate records of files collected and stock delivered
  • Recording deliveries in line with departmental procedures and hospital policies
  • Ensuring accountability and traceability of pharmacy items

Stock Handling and Internal Logistics

  • Moving boxes containing pharmaceutical stock within the pharmacy
  • Assisting with internal distribution tasks as required
  • Supporting pharmacy personnel to ensure uninterrupted service delivery

These responsibilities are essential in ensuring patients receive medication on time and that pharmacy operations run efficiently.
