Position Overview: General Worker
The General Worker position is a hands‑on operational support role responsible for assisting with manual labour, plant cleaning, plant maintenance support, and general site duties. The role supports daily plant operations by ensuring equipment, work areas, and production zones are clean, safe, and functional at all times.
This role requires individuals who can work independently and as part of a team, adhere strictly to safety rules, and perform physically demanding tasks in an industrial setting.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of the General Worker role is to:
- Support plant operations through manual labour and maintenance assistance
- Maintain cleanliness of machinery, screens, and work areas
- Assist with inspections, basic maintenance, and screen changes
- Ensure compliance with all Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) requirements
The role is critical to minimizing downtime, improving site safety, and supporting production efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and Requirements

Education and Skills
- Minimum Grade 12 qualification
- Must be literate and functionally numerate
- Basic knowledge of machinery and plant operations
Medical and Physical Requirements
- Must pass a pre‑employment medical examination
- Must be medically fit in terms of:
- Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
- Afrimat company medical fitness standards
- Ability to:
- Stand for long periods
- Perform physically demanding manual labour
- Work in hot, noisy, and dusty environments
Sensory and Awareness Requirements

- Backup alarms

- Operational plant sounds typical of construction and mining sites

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of the General Worker include, but are not limited to, the following:
Plant Inspection and Operational Support
- Assist with daily pre‑start inspection checks on plant and equipment
- Identify visible safety risks or abnormalities and report them to supervision
- Support operators in maintaining operational readiness
Plant and Equipment Cleaning
- Ensure plant machinery is cleaned regularly and as required
- Clean screens, chutes, walkways, and surrounding plant areas
- Remove debris, spillage, and unsafe obstructions
Maintenance Assistance
- Assist with general maintenance tasks on and around the plant
- Support maintenance teams during repairs and servicing
- Assist with screen changes and related tasks
- Handle basic tools under supervision when required
Site Housekeeping
- Maintain cleanliness of:
- General working areas
- Production zones
- Access ways and platforms
- Ensure the site remains orderly, safe, and compliant with SHE standards
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
- Adhere strictly to all SHE rules and regulations
- Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near‑misses immediately
General Support Duties
- Carry out additional tasks assigned by supervisors or management
- Acknowledge that management may allocate additional duties when operational needs require
- Follow instructions lawfully and responsibly
- Report any operational or elementary problems to the immediate supervisor
Working Hours and Conditions
- Must be willing to work irregular and operational hours
- Night work may be required depending on operational needs
- Work is performed in an industrial / mining / construction environment
