The Food Service Unit is an essential support function within the hospital, ensuring that patients receive nutritionally balanced meals that comply with medical prescriptions, dietary guidelines, and food safety standards.


Purpose of the Role

The purpose of the Food Service Aid position is to support the receiving, storage, preparation, cooking, dishing, and distribution of meals for patients on normal and therapeutic diets. The role ensures compliance with food safety regulations, hygiene standards, and patient‑centred care principles, contributing directly to patient recovery and satisfaction.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Educational Qualifications

  • Grade 10, AET Level 4, or equivalent qualification

Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience in a hospital environment
  • Experience in the food service industry will be an added advantage

Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of:
    • Food safety principles
    • Hygiene practices in food service units
    • Batho Pele Principles in relation to patient service
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Food Receiving and Storage

  • Assist with receiving food supplies and ingredients
  • Ensure correct storage of food items according to safety and hygiene regulations
  • Rotate stock and prevent contamination or food wastage

Food Preparation and Cooking Support

  • Assist in the preparation of food for:
    • Normal diets
    • Therapeutic and special diets
    • Snacks and beverages
  • Support cooking and dishing‑up processes according to approved menus
  • Follow prescribed portion control measures
  • Ensure portions served align with stipulated dietary allowances

Food Distribution

  • Pack meals correctly on delivery trolleys according to ward and diet specifications
  • Ensure timely and accurate distribution of meals to wards
  • Maintain food temperature and hygiene during distribution

Hygiene and Cleanliness

  • Maintain general cleanliness of the food service unit
  • Practice the “clean as you work” principle at all times
  • Perform cleaning of:
    • Floors
    • Storage areas
    • Utensils and equipment
  • Ensure proper waste segregation, sanitation, and disposal
  • Adhere strictly to hygiene and infection‑control protocols

Equipment Use and Safety

  • Operate food service equipment safely and correctly
  • Care for and clean equipment after use
  • Report broken or faulty equipment immediately
  • Report any observed safety risks to supervisors

Compliance and Patient Care

  • Rotate between different areas within the food service unit as required
  • Attend food service‑related training sessions when scheduled
  • Ensure full compliance with:
    • Ideal Hospital Framework
    • Batho Pele Principles
    • Patient Rights Charter
    • Infection Prevention and Control guidelines
  • Contribute to:
    • Managing patient complaints
    • Reporting patient safety incidents

Work Conditions

  • Shift work is compulsory
  • Must be available to work public holidays, weekends, and rotational shifts
  • Must wear appropriate uniform and protective clothing at all times
