Purpose of the Bursary Programme
The Student Cadet Traffic Officer Bursary aims to train disciplined, ethical, and physically capable individuals to support road safety and law enforcement across the Western Cape. Upon completion, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to:
- Enforce road traffic and public transport legislation
- Perform visible traffic control and policing services
- Promote crime prevention and road safety awareness
- Carry out administrative and operational duties within traffic services
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements to be considered:
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) or equivalent qualification
Driver’s Licence
- Valid Code B (Manual) motor vehicle driver’s licence
Age Requirement
- Applicants must be 35 years of age or younger
- Applicants older than 35 years will not be considered
Physical & Medical Fitness
- Must be physically fit
- Pregnant persons will not be considered due to physically demanding training activities
- Must submit a medical certificate confirming:
- Fitness for strenuous physical activity
- Negative pregnancy test result
- Drug‑free status
Personal Appearance
- No visible tattoos or body piercings (except for females with one piercing in each ear)
- This requirement supports discipline, uniformity, and professional presentation
Criminal Record
- Applicants must have no criminal record
Assessment & Selection Process
All shortlisted candidates will undergo a rigorous selection process, including:
- Physical fitness assessments
- Driving assessments
- Written assessments
- Interviews
- Medical, psychological, and drug testing
- Psychometric testing (where required)
- Fingerprint or identity clearance via SAPS
- Integrity and ethical conduct assessment
- Ongoing fitness and drug testing throughout the training period
Only candidates who meet all requirements and pass all assessments will be admitted.
Key Performance Areas (During Training)
Successful bursary recipients will be trained and assessed in the following areas:
- Enforcement of road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation
- Visible traffic policing and road safety operations
- Crime prevention support activities
- Completion of administrative and operational duties
- Compliance with the 12‑month training contract, including:
- Practical deployment
- Shift work on a 24/7 rotational system when required
Competencies and Skills Required
Applicants must demonstrate or develop the following competencies:
- Good written and verbal communication skills in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape
- Strong interpersonal and public relations skills
- Assertiveness and confidence
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Discipline, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility
Remuneration and Benefits
- Training Stipend: R5,000 per month
- Paid monthly for the full 12‑month training period
- Note: The stipend excludes meals and accommodation
This bursary provides financial support while allowing participants to focus fully on their training and development.
