SALARY & REMUNERATION PACKAGE

  • Salary Scale: R165 564 – R193 476 per annum
  • Estimated Total Remuneration Package: R242 666 – R278 193 per annum

(Inclusive of benefits in line with City of Tshwane conditions of service)

To strengthen service delivery within municipal rental housing schemes, the City of Tshwane invites applications for three (3) General Worker positions within the Housing Rental Management Section.


POSITION OVERVIEW: GENERAL WORKER

The General Worker will be responsible for delivering effective cleaning and basic maintenance support services at all municipal rental housing schemes under the Human Settlements Department. This role is essential in maintaining clean, healthy, and habitable living environments for tenants and ensuring compliance with municipal hygiene and safety standards.

The position is well‑suited to individuals who are physically fit, committed to public service, and able to perform continuous manual work in a structured municipal environment.


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The primary purpose of the General Worker position is to render reliable and effective cleaning services across municipal rental housing schemes while supporting the overall upkeep, cleanliness, and presentation of buildings and surrounding grounds.

This role contributes directly to:

  • Improved hygiene and sanitation in rental housing
  • Resident health and safety
  • Safe and clean working and living environments
  • Effective municipal service delivery

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & FUNCTIONS 

1. Cleaning of Rental Housing Buildings

  • Deliver daily and routine cleaning services of municipal buildings within rental housing schemes.
  • Clean corridors, staircases, entrances, communal areas, and internal spaces.
  • Ensure cleanliness standards are maintained consistently across all assigned sites.

2. Cleaning of External Grounds & Open Areas

  • Perform cleaning of surrounding grounds, walkways, and outdoor communal areas.
  • Remove litter, debris, and waste to maintain safe and presentable environments.
  • Assist in preventing health hazards through proper cleaning practices.

3. Hygiene & Workplace Safety Support

  • Ensure high levels of hygiene in high‑traffic areas.
  • Report unsafe, unhygienic, or hazardous conditions to supervisors immediately.
  • Support compliance with municipal health and safety standards.

4. Manual Labour & Physical Tasks

  • Perform continuous physical work including cleaning, sweeping, washing, and waste removal.
  • Stand and walk long distances within the rental housing schemes.
  • Carry out physically demanding tasks during cleaning and maintenance activities.

5. Health & Safety Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
  • Follow all applicable municipal safety policies and procedures.
  • Use prescribed cleaning tools and equipment safely.

6. Support Services & Ad‑Hoc Duties

  • Assist supervisors and housing officials with general operational support where required.
  • Perform additional duties related to cleaning and grounds upkeep as assigned.
  • Support special cleaning interventions or inspections.

MINIMUM APPOINTMENT REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical duties related to cleaning and grounds maintenance.
  • Physical fitness and good overall health.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Added Advantage

  • Previous experience in cleaning or similar repetitive tasks.

SECURITY & SCREENING REQUIREMENTS

  • Must undergo criminal record vetting.
  • Must consent to fingerprinting by the Tshwane Metro Police Department at own cost.
