Job Purpose Summary
South African Breweries (SAB), a proud member of the AB InBev family, is seeking a reliable, skilled, and safety-conscious Shunter Driver to join the East London Depot operations team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient movement (shunting) of vehicles within the depot premises, ensuring trucks are correctly positioned for loading and offloading, and that all activities comply with the organization’s strict safety and operational standards. This role is pivotal to maintaining a smooth logistics flow and ensuring on-time dispatch and delivery of products to SAB’s national customer base.

Minimum Requirements
- Educational Qualification: Matric / Grade 12 Certificate (NQF Level 4).
- Licence and Certification:
- Valid Heavy-Duty Driver’s Licence (Code EC / EC1).
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).
- Experience: Proven experience as a Shunter Driver or Heavy-Duty Vehicle Operator, preferably within a warehouse, manufacturing, or FMCG environment.
- Safety Record: Clean driving record with no major traffic or safety violations.
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to operate electronic logistics systems, handheld devices, and tracking systems used in depot operations.
- Other Requirements:
- Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent eyesight, depth perception, and coordination.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
1. Safe Vehicle Movement and Shunting
- Drive, park, hitch, and unhitch trucks and trailers within the depot and yard safely and efficiently.
- Move vehicles between loading bays, parking areas, and designated positions as per operational plans.
- Ensure correct vehicle-trailer combinations according to the daily load and dispatch plan.
- Maintain safe distances and adhere to man-vs-machine segregation and lock-out procedures.
- Follow all SAB safety, environmental, and health policies at all times.
- Report unsafe conditions, vehicle defects, and potential hazards to the supervisor immediately.
2. Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections using the official SAB vehicle checklist.
- Check and record oil, water, brake fluid, tyre pressure, and lighting systems to ensure operational readiness.
- Identify and report any faults, leaks, or damages immediately for corrective maintenance.
- Ensure that all inspection records and logbooks are completed accurately and submitted on time.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of all assigned vehicles, including cab and loading decks.
3. Loading, Offloading, and Staging
- Coordinate with warehouse and dispatch teams to ensure timely vehicle loading and offloading in accordance with the production schedule.
- Verify that all products are securely loaded, properly stacked, and meet quality assurance standards prior to dispatch.
- Assist with physical product handling if required, following all manual handling and PPE protocols.
- Stage vehicles correctly in allocated departure bays to ensure smooth outbound flow and minimize bottlenecks.
- Support forklift and warehouse operators in maintaining clear traffic lanes and operational efficiency.
4. Operational Coordination
- Collaborate with the Warehouse, Logistics, and Distribution teams to achieve daily operational targets.
- Operate electronic scanners, yard management systems, and tracking tools to record vehicle movements.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding loading status, delays, or any operational challenges.
- Support depot operations during peak periods, ensuring all scheduled vehicles depart on time.
5. Safety and Compliance
- Uphold SAB’s “Safety First” culture by adhering to all occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
- Ensure full compliance with road traffic laws, company driving standards, and vehicle operating protocols.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and refresher training sessions as required.
- Report all incidents, near misses, and unsafe acts immediately in accordance with company reporting procedures.
- Contribute to the depot’s continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing operational safety and efficiency.

Working Conditions
- The role is site-based at SAB’s East London Depot.
- Work is performed primarily outdoors and in warehouse environments, requiring alertness to vehicle and machinery movement.
- Requires shift work, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and public holidays, based on operational needs.
- Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to SAB’s strict safety standards at all times.
