Introduction
The South African Police Service (SAPS) Academy in Philippi seeks disciplined, dedicated, and vigilant individuals to join its security team as Security Officers. This role forms an essential part of ensuring the safety, protection, and orderly functioning of the Academy’s premises, assets, employees, trainees, and visitors. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong sense of integrity, a commitment to upholding the law, and the ability to work effectively within a high-risk security environment.
Security Officers at the Academy provide critical protective services, conduct access control, secure public premises, maintain order, and support SAPS personnel by ensuring that all movements, activities, and security-related procedures comply with legislation and SAPS policies. The position requires individuals who are observant, responsible, physically fit, and capable of responding calmly and professionally to a range of security situations.
Minimum Post Requirements
To be considered for appointment, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Mandatory Requirements
- Be a South African Citizen with valid proof of identity.
- Be proficient in at least two official languages, one of which must be English.
- Possess no previous criminal or departmental convictions, nor any pending cases.
- Be prepared to undergo comprehensive vetting, including security screening, fingerprint verification, and background checks.
- Have successfully completed Grade 10 (Standard 8) / NQF Level 3, with documentary proof available when required.
- Hold a valid PSIRA registration.
- Possess a Grade C security certificate or higher.
- Not be declared unfit to possess a firearm and be willing to undergo firearm competency training and maintain firearm proficiency.
- Be willing and able to work shifts, extended hours, weekends, and public holidays.
Added Advantages
- A relevant qualification (Degree/Diploma) in security services.
- A valid driver’s licence for a light motor vehicle.
- Additional security courses aligned with SAPS environment and responsibilities.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Security Officers at SAPS Academy Philippi are entrusted with executing key functions that preserve the safety of people, property, and essential infrastructure. Core duties include:
Access Control & Premises Security
- Enforce security protocols as mandated under the Control of Access to Public Premises and Vehicles Act (Act No. 53 of 1985).
- Perform positive identification of employees, visitors, contractors, and trainees at entry points.
- Maintain electronic and manual records of all individuals entering or exiting the premises.
- Conduct electronic searches of persons and vehicles when necessary.
- Authorize access only after verifying credentials and compliance with security requirements.
- Issue visitor control cards, ensure proper escorting procedures, and retrieve access cards upon exit.
- Register and document all visitors accurately and maintain updated visitor logs.
Security Monitoring & Patrol Duties
- Conduct regular patrols of buildings, training areas, and fenced-off zones.
- Inspect vehicles and equipment stationed within designated areas to ensure security compliance.
- Monitor and check all installed security infrastructure, including surveillance systems, alarm points, and access gates.
- Identify and report security risks, defective equipment, or irregular activities for immediate corrective action.
Protection of SAPS Assets
- Safeguard premises, property, confidential information, and sensitive equipment.
- Verify and inspect items, supplier deliveries, and personal belongings entering the facility to ensure they pose no threat to safety.
- Provide a visible security presence to deter unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and breaches.
Incident Reporting & Compliance
- Report all security breaches, irregularities, and incidents to senior security personnel promptly.
- Compile accurate, detailed, and complete security reports.
- Support SAPS protocols regarding safety, occupational health, and incident management.
