Purpose of the Job
The primary purpose of the General Worker – Upskilling role is to operate mining-related machinery and equipment within defined parameters in order to reduce waste, improve operational efficiency, and optimise operating costs. The role supports safe, reliable, and sustainable mining operations while providing the employee with structured learning and practical experience.
This position plays an important role in maintaining equipment reliability, plant sustainability, and safety compliance within Sasol Mining operations.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Formal Education
- Completed Matric / Grade 12 / N3 qualification or equivalent
Work Experience
- Mining underground experience will be a strong advantage but is not mandatory
- Exposure to industrial, mining, or plant environments will be beneficial
Additional Requirements

- Ability to follow procedures, safety standards, and instructions

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of operational and support activities, including but not limited to:
Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE)
- Applying and maintaining strict safety standards in the working environment
- Adhering to Sasol’s SHE policies, procedures, and risk management standards
- Participating in toolbox talks, PDAs, RCAs, and My IMS inspections
- Supporting plant safety, stability, and sustainability initiatives
Operational Duties
- Operating mining-related machinery and equipment according to design specifications
- Performing work according to approved plans and schedules
- Attending daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments and priorities
- Conducting plant inspections and carrying out minor repairs where required
Equipment and Maintenance Support
- Identifying equipment faults using approved diagnostic methods
- Reporting defects to ensure equipment availability and reliability
- Ensuring correct maintenance history and feedback is captured
- Supporting the replacement of critical spares to improve plant performance
Housekeeping and Environmental Compliance
- Maintaining good housekeeping standards in work areas
- Adhering to waste disposal and environmental management procedures
- Supporting clean, efficient, and compliant mining operations
Communication and Reporting
- Providing regular and accurate feedback to supervisors on work progress
- Communicating effectively with customers and team members
- Ensuring work is completed within agreed deadlines
Training and Development
- Attending required training courses, seminars, and development programmes
- Identifying personal training and development needs
- Contributing to a Personal Development Plan (PDP) with approval from the group leader
- Actively participating in continuous improvement initiatives within the work area
