About the Role

The Workshop Assistant is responsible for supporting Mechanical Technicians and Artisans by performing hands‑on maintenance, fault identification, repairs, and overhaul of pumps, motors, and auxiliary plant equipment. Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

✔ Educational Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric (Essential)
  • N3 Certificate in Fitting and Turning

✔ Mandatory Certifications

  • Trade Certificate (Mechanical / Fitting & Turning trade test)

✔ Experience Requirements

  • Three years of experience in maintenance of pumps
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance of plant & equipment

✔ Licensing

  • Valid Code 08 Driver’s License

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Workshop Assistant performs a combination of scheduled, preventive, and urgent maintenance activities on mechanical plant equipment. Duties include:


1. Daily Mechanical Maintenance

  • Conduct routine maintenance on mechanical and auxiliary plant equipment.
  • Perform general inspections to ensure plant safety and mechanical readiness.
  • Monitor plant conditions and report abnormalities.

2. Scheduled Preventative Maintenance

  • Execute preventative maintenance (PM) tasks as per the maintenance schedule.
  • Inspect mechanical components, identify wear, and replace parts when needed.
  • Assist in maintaining maintenance logs and PM records.

Preventative maintenance is essential to reduce plant downtime, extend asset lifespan, and maintain uninterrupted operations.


3. Pump & Motor Overhauls

  • Perform scheduled overhauls on pumps, motors, and mechanical systems.
  • Strip, inspect, repair, and reassemble equipment to manufacturer specifications.
  • Assist in reinstallation, alignment, and commissioning of overhauled components.

4. Safety Inspections

  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with mechanical safety protocols.
  • Identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and take corrective measures.
  • Serve as a safety representative when required.

5. Equipment Failure Identification

  • Diagnose mechanical failures quickly and accurately.
  • Assist in determining root causes of malfunctions.

6. Machining & Fabrication

  • Perform general machining tasks, including:
    • Grinding
    • Milling
    • Drilling
    • Turning
  • Assist in fabrication work when required.

7. Welding & Flame Cutting

  • Carry out welding activities and flame‑cutting tasks as needed.
  • Assist in structural repair and metalwork tasks.

8. Rigging of Equipment

  • Support rigging operations involving the lifting and moving of heavy mechanical equipment.
  • Work with riggers to safely relocate pumps, motors, valves, and components.

9. Standby Duties

  • Participate in standby and after-hours callouts.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns to restore plant operations.
