The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking dedicated, reliable, and hardworking individuals to join the Dunswart Provincial Laundry as Laundry Worker Level II employees. This is an excellent opportunity to enter or grow within the public healthcare support environment.

As part of the province’s professional laundry services unit, you will play a crucial role in supporting hospitals, clinics, and health centres with clean, sanitised linen that contributes directly to patient care, infection control, and healthcare efficiency.

Purpose of the Position

The Laundry Worker Level II supports the efficient functioning of the provincial laundry facility by ensuring the accurate sorting, washing, drying, folding, and distribution of linen for healthcare institutions. The role also ensures compliance with hygiene standards, safety procedures, and departmental quality standards.

Your contribution directly supports patient well‑being, infection prevention, and overall healthcare service delivery.


Key Duties & Responsibilities (Expanded & SEO‑Optimized)

As a Laundry Worker Level II, your responsibilities will include:


1. Linen Sorting, Loading, and Unloading

  • Load and unload laundry machines with linen according to safety procedures.
  • Sort linen by type, fabric, level of soiling, and washing requirements.
  • Separate contaminated linen following infection control protocols.
  • Ensure accurate counting and recording of linen items.

Sorting and loading linen correctly ensures proper cleaning cycles and boosts operational efficiency.


2. Washing, Drying, and Processing Linen

  • Operate industrial washing machines, dryers, and related equipment.
  • Follow standard operating procedures for water temperature, detergent use, and washing cycles.
  • Remove washed linen and prepare it for drying, folding, or ironing.
  • Ensure washing processes meet hygiene standards required in healthcare environments.

Safe and effective operation of laundry equipment contributes directly to controlling infections within healthcare facilities.


3. Ironing and Pressing Linen

  • Iron and press linen using industrial press machines and ironing equipment.
  • Maintain smooth, clean, and properly pressed linen that meets departmental standards.
  • Handle delicate and heavy linen professionally and efficiently.

Pressed linen is essential for patient comfort and clinical presentation.


4. Folding, Labeling, and Packaging Linen

  • Accurately fold different types of linen such as sheets, gowns, towels, and uniforms.
  • Attach correct labels and tags to linen bags for identification.
  • Seal linen bags and prepare them for transport to healthcare facilities.
  • Ensure correct quantities are packaged for each hospital or clinic.

This ensures that healthcare facilities receive the correct, contamination‑free linen at the right time.


5. Cleanliness & Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness of the working area, laundry machines, and storage areas.
  • Clean trolleys, containers, sorting tables, and floors as required.
  • Report malfunctioning machines or damaged linen to supervisors.
  • Follow safety procedures when cleaning or disinfecting equipment.

A safe, hygienic environment is essential for both staff well‑being and patient safety.


6. Collection and Delivery Preparation

  • Count linen deliveries to ensure accurate volumes.
  • Prepare clean linen for collection and distribution.
  • Pick up dirty linen from designated areas and sort accordingly.

Accurate collection and delivery support seamless hospital operations.


Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Laundry Worker Level II position, applicants must meet the following:

Education

  • Minimum Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification.

Experience

  • Previous experience in laundry operations, cleaning, or general work is an advantage.

Additional Requirements

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work night shifts when required.
  • Physical strength to lift, carry, and move linen and equipment.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
