Position & Location
Cleaner – Multiple posts available at the following Western Cape Department of Health facilities:
- Retreat Community Health Centre (3 posts)
- Vanguard CHC (1 post)
- District Six CDC (1 post)
- Lotus River CDC (2 posts)
- Mamre CDC (1 post)
- Lady Michaelis CDC (1 post)
Salary: R138 486 per annum

Minimum Requirements
- Education: Basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Experience: Previous cleaning experience in a healthcare or similar environment; practical ability to lift and operate heavy-duty cleaning equipment
- Physical Capability: Ability to perform physical tasks, including manual lifting and prolonged standing
- Shift Flexibility: Willingness to work shifts including weekends, public holidays, and night duties when required; ability to rotate between departments or facilities based on operational requirements
- Communication Skills: Clear verbal [and basic written] communication; strong interpersonal skills
Key Competencies / Knowledge
- Knowledge of correct methods for handling, sorting, and disposing of refuse, waste, and contaminated materials
- Familiarity with occupational health and safety practices, including the use of cleaning equipment and handling of chemicals
- Ability to operate, maintain, and store cleaning tools and machinery safely and efficiently
- Team-oriented approach; ability to support supervisors and colleagues in achieving cleaning and hygiene standards
Primary Responsibilities
- General Cleaning & Maintenance
- Execute daily cleaning tasks (sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, dusting, polishing), manage refuse removal, and clean windows, walls, floors, and clinic exteriors, ensuring compliance with infection control standards
- Materials & Equipment Management
- Use cleaning products judiciously, store equipment safely, maintain functionality, and report any defects
- Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to occupational health and safety policies, handle chemicals per guidelines, report hazards, and participate in maintaining a safe environment
- Hygiene Standards
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and neatness to ensure a hygienic facility ready for patients and staff
- Operational Support
- Provide effective housekeeping support to facility managers, supervisors, and team members; assist with ad-hoc duties and relief cleaning as needed
Work Environment
- Employment: Permanent, full-time
- Shifts: Flexible work schedule including weekends, public holidays, and night shifts
- Rotation: Staff may be rotated across facilities within Metro Health Services based on operational needs
- Assessment: Shortlisted applicants may be required to undergo a practical or written assessment relevant to the cleaning duties
