INTRODUCTION

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) is seeking to appoint qualified and linguistically skilled individuals to serve as Court Interpreters in various Magistrate’s Offices across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal. This is an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals with a passion for language, legal processes, and public service to support access to justice and uphold fairness in court proceedings.

The successful candidates will be responsible for interpreting legal proceedings, translating documents, maintaining accurate records, and facilitating communication between judicial officers, court users, and various stakeholders.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate (NQF Level 4) or equivalent
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the specified indigenous languages listed per location
  • At least 3 months of practical interpreting experience is advantageous (but not mandatory)
  • Driver’s license is an added advantage
  • Must be legally eligible to work in South Africa

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Court Interpreter, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Interpreting accurately in Criminal, Civil, Labour, and Quasi-judicial Court proceedings
  • Interpreting during consultations, legal meetings, and court-related discussions
  • Translating legal documents, exhibits, and official correspondence as required
  • Recording proceedings in the Criminal Record Book (CRB)
  • Preparing case records as requested by Magistrates and Prosecutors
  • Compiling and submitting statistical data and reports as per departmental procedures
  • Maintaining high standards of confidentiality, neutrality, and professionalism
