Job Purpose
The Government of South Africa invites applications for the position of Driver/Messenger, a crucial role that ensures reliable, secure, and efficient transportation and courier services across government offices. The incumbent will be responsible for the safe conveyance of officials, staff, and stakeholders, and for the timely delivery of official documents, packages, and goods.
This position plays a key role in maintaining the smooth operation of public services and upholding the image and professionalism of government institutions. Whether stationed in Pretoria, Polokwane, Johannesburg, or elsewhere, the role demands discipline, discretion, and dependability.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport government officials, employees, and visitors to various locations in a professional, safe, and timely manner.
- Adhere to all road traffic regulations, government policies, and security protocols.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance checks of the vehicle and report any mechanical issues.
- Ensure vehicles are always clean, serviced, roadworthy, and presentable.
- Follow planned routes and schedules efficiently, adapting in real time to delays or diversions.
- Load and unload packages, luggage, and equipment as required.
- Deliver and collect confidential documents, packages, files, and other goods, ensuring secure handling.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, including mileage, fuel usage, trip records, maintenance history, and delivery logs.
- Uphold strict confidentiality when handling official information and materials.
- Ensure all security and safety measures are adhered to when transporting passengers and materials.
- Provide general administrative support, such as running errands, delivering post, and reporting logistical issues.
Minimum Requirements
- Educational Qualification:
- Grade 10 / ABET Level 4 or equivalent qualification
- Additional relevant short courses will be an advantage
- Driver’s License:
- A valid South African driver’s license (Code B/08)
- Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) required for specific roles
- Experience:
- 1–2 years working experience in a similar environment is advantageous
- Knowledge:
- Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Public Service Act, Transport Circular 4 of 2000, National Road Traffic Act (1996)
- Basic understanding of government protocols and confidentiality policies
- Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent driving skills
