As part of this growth, Clicks is recruiting Shop Assistants / Cashiers nationwide to join our dynamic in-store teams. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about customer care, teamwork, and retail operations, who thrive in a fast-paced and customer-focused environment.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this position is to deliver outstanding service at the point of sale (POS) by ensuring transactions are processed efficiently and accurately while creating a friendly, engaging, and helpful shopping experience for customers. The Shop Assistant / Cashier will also be responsible for maintaining attractive product displays, assisting customers with inquiries, and actively promoting Clicks ClubCard membership to ensure customer loyalty and retention.
In short, this role is key to enhancing customer satisfaction, ensuring store profitability, and upholding the Clicks brand’s high standards of service excellence.
Key Responsibilities
1. Point-of-Sale (POS) Operations
- Process customer transactions efficiently and accurately, ensuring correct handling of cash, card, and ClubCard transactions.
- Maintain vigilance and accuracy when scanning products and processing payments to prevent cash shortages or discrepancies.
- Balance the till and ensure all cash-up procedures are completed according to company policy.
- Resolve minor POS-related issues or refer them to the supervisor when necessary.
- Adhere to all cash handling, reconciliation, and security procedures to safeguard company assets.
2. Customer Service Excellence
- Greet customers warmly and assist them in locating products or understanding promotions.
- Provide information about in-store products, promotions, and special offers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Handle customer inquiries, complaints, and returns courteously and in line with store procedures.
- Maintain a high standard of personal presentation and behavior that reflects the Clicks brand values of care, trust, and excellence.
3. ClubCard Promotion and Customer Loyalty
- Actively promote the Clicks ClubCard program to customers during every interaction.
- Educate customers on the benefits of the loyalty program, encouraging sign-ups and consistent use.
- Meet and exceed ClubCard participation targets, contributing to the success of Clicks’ customer retention strategy.
4. Merchandising and Store Presentation
- Assist with unpacking, pricing, and displaying merchandise in a neat, organized, and visually appealing manner.
- Ensure shelves are well-stocked, clean, and correctly labeled at all times.
- Support regular stock counts, replenishment, and rotation to prevent product expiry or loss.
- Maintain compliance with health and safety and hygiene standards in all merchandising activities.
5. Sales and Target Achievement
- Contribute to meeting individual and store sales targets through upselling, cross-selling, and customer engagement.
- Promote add-on sales where appropriate, such as highlighting new or complementary products.
- Participate in team efforts to achieve daily, weekly, and monthly sales objectives.
6. Operational and Compliance Support
- Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for store operations, including cash management, stock control, and loss prevention.
- Support store opening and closing procedures when scheduled.
- Report any irregularities, stock discrepancies, or suspicious activity immediately to management.
- Uphold all company policies, including ethical conduct, anti-theft protocols, and workplace safety requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Essential: Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate (Matric)
- Desirable: Minimum 50% pass in Mathematics and English at Grade 12 level
Experience
- Desirable: Previous experience in a retail or FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) environment involving customer interaction, POS operations, or merchandising.
- Not essential: Entry-level candidates with strong communication and customer service potential are encouraged to apply.
Skills and Competencies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English essential; additional South African languages advantageous).
- Customer-focused attitude with the ability to remain polite, patient, and professional.
- Attention to detail, especially when handling cash or data entry.
- Team player with strong interpersonal skills and willingness to assist colleagues.
- Ability to multitask and perform under pressure during busy retail hours.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with POS systems (advantageous).
