Purpose of the Job

The Logistics Coordinator – Container and Isotainer Operations is responsible for the efficient movement, coordination, and documentation of empty and full containers (including isotainers) between depots, packing sites, and vessel stacks. This role ensures all transport, inspection, and loading activities are executed accurately, timeously, and in compliance with Sasol’s operational, safety, and environmental standards.

The incumbent will play a critical part in ensuring the seamless flow of products and materials, minimizing waste, and maintaining full traceability across all logistics processes within the supply chain network.


Key Responsibilities

1. Container and Isotainer Coordination

  • Manage the movement of empty containers and isotainers from depots to packing sites and vessel stacks according to operational schedules.
  • Ensure the timely placement, loading, and retrieval of all containers to avoid demurrage or delays.
  • Maintain real-time communication with packing sites, transporters, and depots to track and confirm container availability and utilization.
  • Apply the FIFO (First-In-First-Out) principle for all empty and full drum management to ensure product quality and operational efficiency.

2. Documentation and Compliance

  • Prepare and process all relevant shipping and logistics documentation, including CTOs, PDs, and shipment records in SAP.
  • Interface with Transnet to ensure NAVIS system updates are performed timeously and accurately.
  • Book and coordinate inspections with approved inspection houses, ensuring all containers are certified and cleared before being placed into vessel stacks.
  • Maintain meticulous records of container movements, inspection certificates, and shipment documentation in compliance with Sasol’s governance framework.

3. Product Handling and Stock Control

  • Oversee bulk and isotainer loading, drumming, container packing, flexitainer operations, and pipeline transfers.
  • Monitor all slops and waste materials, ensuring proper analysis, classification, and routing to land tanks, slops tanks, or rework facilities.
  • Coordinate the return of slops to the plant for reprocessing, incineration, or appropriate disposal while maintaining full SAP traceability.
  • Participate actively in monthly stock counts and reconciliation, ensuring data accuracy and reporting any variances to management.

4. Operational Efficiency and Cost Control

  • Proactively identify opportunities to streamline logistics processes and minimize waste or delays.
  • Create Purchase Requisitions (PRs) and manage Shipment Costs on SAP to ensure proper cost allocation.
  • Support the logistics and procurement teams in ensuring on-time delivery of empty drums, containers, and packaging materials.
  • Implement and maintain key performance metrics for timeliness, documentation accuracy, and inventory integrity.

5. Safety, Health, and Environment (SHEQ)

  • Comply with Sasol’s SHEQ standards, procedures, and policies at all times.
  • Promote a culture of zero harm, safety awareness, and continuous improvement across all logistics operations.
  • Report and assist in investigating any incidents, spills, or non-conformances related to container handling and transport.
  • Ensure the proper use of PPE, vehicle safety checks, and adherence to environmental regulations.

6. Communication and Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Maintain effective communication with internal departments (logistics, operations, procurement, quality, and compliance).
  • Liaise with external service providers including Transnet, inspection houses, and transport contractors.
  • Provide regular status reports and operational feedback to management and participate in site and coordination meetings.
  • Support cross-functional initiatives aimed at improving supply chain transparency and sustainability.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Grade 12 / Matric (NQF Level 4) essential.
  • Experience: Minimum 2–4 years’ experience in logistics coordination, container management, or shipping administration within a manufacturing, petrochemical, or supply chain environment.
  • Systems Knowledge: Proficiency in SAP, NAVIS, and MS Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license with own reliable transport may be required.

Working Conditions

  • The role involves both office-based and field coordination activities, including site visits to depots, inspection facilities, and packing plants.
  • Candidates must be willing to work standby shifts and outside normal business hours when required.
  • Occasional travel to external sites for meetings, audits, or investigations will form part of the role.
