Introduction
The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development, through its Sustainable Employment Facilitation Branch, invites unemployed individuals to apply for the position of General Worker (EPWP). This opportunity forms part of the City’s Expanded Public Works Programme aimed at job creation, skills development, and the improvement of service delivery in local communities. These short-term roles focus on maintaining a clean, hygienic, and safe urban environment while providing temporary employment opportunities to residents across all seven regions of Johannesburg.

Job Purpose
The purpose of the General Worker (EPWP) position is to support the City’s environmental management initiatives by performing manual labour duties that enhance cleanliness, health, and safety across public spaces. The role includes litter-picking, street sweeping, waste loading, and removing illegal dumping materials. The incumbent will assist during clean-up campaigns, contribute to the maintenance of public spaces, and help protect the environment through daily cleaning operations.
Minimum Requirements
- Educational Requirement: Grade 8 or equivalent qualification.
- Experience: No prior experience required.
- Other Requirements:
- Must be physically fit and mentally healthy.
- Must be able to work independently and under pressure.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness to work shifts as required.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Litter-Picking and Street Sweeping
- Perform ongoing litter collection across streets, sidewalks, parks, public squares, and busy pedestrian routes.
- Sweep pavements, curbs, and public walkways to promote visual cleanliness and reduce health hazards.
- Removal of Illegal Dumping and Waste
- Identify illegal dumping hotspots, remove waste, rubble, and debris, and ensure thorough cleaning of affected areas.
- Load waste materials onto trucks, ensuring that waste is removed safely and efficiently.
- Assist with clearing spillages caused by broken bags or overflowing waste containers.
- Cleaning Informal Settlements and Public Spaces
- Clean and maintain informal settlement areas to support hygienic living conditions.
- Participate in scheduled clean-up campaigns in collaboration with various City departments.
- Removal of Pamphlets, Stickers, and Posters
- Remove illegal stickers, posters, and pamphlets from street furniture, road signs, bins, and utility poles.
- Ensure that public infrastructure remains clean and visually appealing.
- Support to City Departments
- Assist environmental teams and other municipal departments during special projects.
- Report areas requiring attention, unsafe conditions, or vandalised infrastructure.
- General Labour Support
- Handle manual tasks and support supervisors with any additional duties associated with maintaining cleanliness and order across neighbourhoods.
- Work collaboratively with team members to ensure that daily performance targets are achieved.
