Job Purpose

The Courier is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and timeous collection and delivery of laboratory specimens, medical reports, and related materials between healthcare facilities, depots, and laboratories.

This role contributes directly to operational efficiency, service quality, and customer satisfaction by ensuring that specimens and reports are transported securely and in compliance with health, safety, and quality assurance standards.

The incumbent will also support shuttle and logistics operations while upholding Lancet’s professional image and delivering excellent customer service.


Key Responsibilities

1. Collection and Delivery Services

  • Conduct daily collections and deliveries of laboratory specimens, reports, and other items between laboratories, doctors, clinics, hospitals, and clients as per established schedules.
  • Check moxes, manifests, and task lists for items requiring delivery or collection to plan efficient and logical routes.
  • Ensure that all specimens, documentation, and goods are delivered safely, promptly, and in good condition to designated destinations.
  • Obtain and sign proofs of delivery (PODs) or collection receipts to maintain accurate tracking and accountability records.
  • Communicate promptly with laboratories or clients regarding unexpected delays, traffic issues, or urgent requests, ensuring transparency and reliability.

2. Specimen Handling and Tracking

  • Scan specimens and reports using the Courier Management Programme or relevant systems to ensure full traceability from collection to delivery.
  • Handle all biological samples in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and Quality Assurance protocols to prevent contamination or spillage.
  • Use appropriate protective wear (e.g., gloves, goggles, specimen bags) during handling and transportation to ensure personal safety and specimen integrity.
  • Report any incidents of spillage, specimen damage, or equipment malfunction immediately to management.

3. Route Planning and Coordination

  • Plan and follow efficient delivery routes daily to optimize fuel usage and time management while maintaining punctual service delivery.
  • Liaise with the Depot Manager or Logistics Coordinator regarding route changes, emergency collections, and schedule updates.
  • Support other couriers or logistics staff when necessary, particularly during peak periods or in the absence of other team members.

4. Vehicle and Asset Management

  • Perform daily vehicle inspections before and after trips, including checks on tyres, fuel, lights, brakes, and cleanliness, ensuring roadworthiness at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, petrol usage, and delivery routes as per company policy.
  • Ensure proper safekeeping and maintenance of all assigned assets, including vehicles, petrol cards, uniforms, and electronic devices.
  • Report any vehicle faults, damages, or accidents promptly by completing and submitting an Incident or Accident Report to management.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and safety protocols while operating company vehicles.

5. Safety, Quality, and Compliance

  • Comply with Lancet Laboratories’ Health and Safety regulations, particularly regarding the transportation of potentially hazardous biological materials.
  • Ensure temperature control and secure packaging of specimens to maintain quality and validity during transit.
  • Maintain a clean, hygienic vehicle environment and immediately report hazardous spills or contamination risks to management.
  • Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act 85 of 1993) and internal Quality Assurance Standards at all times.
  • Support quality audits and adhere to all internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to courier and logistics activities.

6. Customer Service and Communication

  • Provide professional, courteous, and respectful service to clients, doctors, and healthcare staff during deliveries and collections.
  • Maintain regular communication with depots and laboratories to confirm successful deliveries or report any collection issues.
  • Represent Lancet Laboratories’ brand values through professionalism, patience, and problem-solving in all client interactions.
  • Escalate unresolved issues or customer complaints to the relevant supervisor for appropriate follow-up.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 10 with 2–3 years relevant courier or logistics experience, OR
  • Grade 10 with a minimum of 10 years courier experience, OR
  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Preferred)
  • Valid Code 8 (EB) or Code 10 driver’s licence
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) (preferred or must be obtained within a short period of employment)

Experience Advantage:

  • Prior experience in laboratory, healthcare, or medical logistics will be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Courier Management Systems or specimen-tracking applications.

  • Navigation and Route Management: Strong familiarity with local routes and traffic patterns in and around Nelspruit and Mpumalanga.
  • Technical Familiarity: Basic understanding of courier systems, handheld scanners, and mobile tracking applications.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves minor route or delivery issues independently.

Remuneration

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, aligned with Lancet Laboratories’ pay structure and employee benefits policy.

The package includes:

  • Base salary (dependent on experience level)
  • Applicable allowances (vehicle/fuel, uniform, overtime where applicable)
  • Benefits per company standards (medical aid, provident fund, etc.)
