Introduction

Mediclinic Southern Africa is seeking a reliable, compassionate, and service-driven individual to join the hospital team as a Patient Transporter. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring safe, efficient, and dignified movement of patients, equipment, and essential documentation between various units of the hospital. As frontline support staff, Patient Transporters contribute directly to the seamless functioning of clinical operations and uphold the standards of patient care for which Mediclinic is known.

This position requires a professional who can provide exceptional client service, manage patient interactions with empathy, maintain confidentiality, and collaborate with healthcare professionals. The ideal candidate should be committed to service excellence, safety, and compliance with hospital protocols, while ensuring every patient journey within the facility is handled with care and precision.


Main Purpose of the Job

The primary purpose of the Patient Transporter is to transport, escort, and assist patients throughout the hospital in a safe, respectful, and efficient manner. This includes facilitating the movement of patients to diagnostic departments, wards, theatres, and other hospital areas. Additionally, the role requires transporting files, equipment, and essential items to support departmental operations.

The incumbent will also assist during emergency evacuations, execute designated driving duties, and uphold hospital values by maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating respect toward patients and healthcare workers.


Key Responsibility Areas

1. Patient Transport and Escort Services

  • Safely transport patients to and from wards, theatres, diagnostic rooms, and other internal departments as directed.
  • Ensure patients are handled with dignity, compassion, and respect at all times.
  • Use appropriate kinetic handling techniques to transfer patients onto wheelchairs, stretchers, and trolleys.
  • Escort ambulatory patients who require assistance navigating the hospital.
  • Monitor patient safety during movement, identifying and reporting any concerns.

2. Emergency Support and Evacuation

  • Participate in emergency evacuation procedures in alignment with hospital emergency protocols.
  • Assist clinical teams in relocating patients during fire drills, disasters, or life-threatening situations.
  • Maintain awareness of internal evacuation routes and assembly points.

3. Driver and Support Functions

  • Perform driving duties within hospital guidelines when requested by management.
  • Transport equipment, files, specimens, or essential items to designated locations promptly and securely.
  • Maintain the hospital vehicle (if assigned) by reporting defects, ensuring cleanliness, and adhering to safe driving practices.

4. Administrative and Communication Support

  • Assist with basic administrative tasks such as transporting files, delivering documentation, and communicating patient status updates to nursing personnel.
  • Operate two-way radio systems and follow instructions accurately.
  • Adhere to hospital documentation procedures and medico-legal guidelines.

5. Patient Rights, Confidentiality, and Professional Conduct

  • Uphold the Patient Rights Charter at all times.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling patient information or sensitive matters.
  • Represent Mediclinic values through professional behavior, courtesy, and accountability.

Required Education

Essential Education

  • Grade 10 or equivalent schooling.

Desired Education

  • None; additional training will be provided.

Required Experience

Essential Experience

  • Experience dealing with clients or the general public.
  • Ability to handle customer-facing interactions professionally.

Desired Experience

  • Prior exposure in a healthcare environment, e.g., care work, medical logistics, or hospital operations.

Required Job Skills and Knowledge

  • Valid driver’s licence with Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
  • Good command of English (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Understanding of kinetic handling principles and safe patient movement.
  • Knowledge of medico-legal risk factors related to patient care.
  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
  • Ability to operate two-way communication systems.
  • Familiarity with hospital evacuation plans and emergency routes.
  • Basic knowledge of administrative tasks and document handling.
  • Understanding of the Health and Safety Act and hospital safety regulations.
