About the Role

As a Facility Attendant, you will be responsible for upholding the highest level of hygiene, equipment organization, and member support on the gym floor. Your main mission is to ensure that all equipment is re‑racked correctly, the environment remains clean and hazard‑free, and members experience a safe, comfortable, and motivating workout space.

This role is central to the smooth daily operation of the club and directly impacts member satisfaction, retention, and overall club reputation. Planet Fitness prides itself on providing clean, professional, and well‑maintained facilities, and the Facility Attendant is a key contributor to this standard.


Key Responsibilities

1. Gym Floor Cleanliness & Equipment Management

  • Perform ongoing inspections of the gym floor throughout your shift to maintain order, cleanliness, and equipment safety.
  • Re‑rack weights, dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, and all functional training equipment to ensure items are always in their designated storage areas.
  • Clean and sanitize gym equipment, cardio machines, weight machines, benches, mats, and accessories regularly to meet Planet Fitness hygiene standards.
  • Remove sweat marks, fingerprints, dust, and debris from all fitness equipment and member areas.

2. Member Support & Service Excellence

  • Assist members in locating equipment and understanding correct equipment etiquette.
  • Offer friendly, proactive support to ensure members feel welcomed, safe, and valued.
  • Respond to basic member queries or concerns regarding facility cleanliness and equipment availability.
  • Maintain a positive and approachable attitude that contributes to a customer‑focused gym environment.

3. Health, Safety & Hazard Monitoring

  • Identify and report broken, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment immediately to the maintenance team or club management.
  • Monitor the gym floor for any safety hazards, including loose equipment, spills, or member misuse of machines.
  • Take quick action to eliminate or report safety risks to protect both members and staff.
  • Ensure walkways, weight areas, and training spaces are always clear and safe.

4. General Facility Upkeep

  • Support the maintenance and housekeeping teams with general cleaning tasks, including wiping mirrors, sanitizing high‑touch surfaces, sweeping or mopping floors, emptying bins, and restocking sanitation supplies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of stretching zones, functional training areas, and accessory stations.
  • Assist with setting up and dismantling equipment for group classes, special events, fitness activities, or member demonstrations.

5. Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with the club’s operations, maintenance, and service teams to maintain a consistently high standard throughout the facility.
  • Communicate equipment issues, cleaning needs, or member concerns promptly to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture by supporting colleagues, sharing responsibilities, and maintaining professionalism.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification is required.

Experience

  • Previous experience in cleaning, facility maintenance, hospitality, or a fitness environment is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Candidates with experience in gyms, sports facilities, or customer‑service‑driven roles will receive preference.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining a clean, organized environment.
  • Ability to lift weights, move heavy equipment, and safely manage physical tasks.
  • Good communication skills and a friendly, helpful approach to assisting members.
  • High level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team in a fast‑paced environment.

Availability

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including:
    • Early mornings
    • Evenings
    • Weekends
    • Public holidays

Fitness environments require full operational coverage, and flexibility is essential for this role.
