As a General Assistant, you will play a vital part in delivering exceptional customer service, maintaining merchandising standards, supporting stock management, and ensuring the store environment is safe, clean, and welcoming. Role Overview

The General Assistant is responsible for providing outstanding customer service, merchandising stock according to store layout and planograms, ensuring proper housekeeping, and supporting operational processes. The goal is to create a pleasant shopping experience for every customer while contributing to the store’s efficiency, safety, and profitability.


Key Responsibilities

1. Customer Service Excellence

Providing exceptional customer service is the heart of this role. You will:

  • Assist customers with product queries, ensuring they receive accurate information and guidance.
  • Help customers locate products quickly and efficiently.
  • Handle customer complaints professionally and assist in resolving issues promptly.
  • Maintain a friendly, approachable, and helpful attitude at all times.

2. Merchandising & Stock Presentation

A well‑presented store increases customer satisfaction and sales. You will:

  • Merchandise bulk stock and shelf stock safely and neatly according to the store layout plan.
  • Follow planograms and store standards to ensure shelves are always full, clean, and visually appealing.
  • Ensure products are correctly displayed, rotated, and handled with care.
  • Report low stock, damaged items, or discrepancies to the Store Manager immediately.

A well‑merchandised store creates an inviting environment and makes products easy to find.


3. Housekeeping & Store Hygiene

Cleanliness and organization are essential in creating a safe and enjoyable shopping experience. Duties include:

  • Keeping your assigned area clean, neat, and free of obstacles or safety hazards.
  • Ensuring stock received is immediately unpacked and merchandised.
  • Maintaining clean aisles so customers can move comfortably without risk.
  • Ensuring correct shelf price labelling is in place at all times.
  • Completing required daily checklists, including canteen, toilet, and showers schedule when assigned.

Maintaining a high housekeeping standard demonstrates professionalism and enhances customer trust.


4. Safety & OHSA Compliance

Safety is a critical priority. You will:

  • Ensure strict adherence to OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) standards.
  • Wear safety gear when required and encourage safe practices among colleagues.
  • Ensure shelves, racking, and bulk stock areas are merchandised safely and securely.
  • Immediately report safety concerns, hazards, or irregularities.

Your vigilance helps protect customers, colleagues, and the store from unnecessary risks.


5. Stock Loss Prevention

Minimizing stock losses directly impacts store profitability. You will:

  • Report damaged stock in your area of responsibility promptly.
  • Handle products carefully to prevent breakage and loss.
  • Monitor your area for theft risks and suspicious activity.

Being alert and responsible helps reduce waste and improves overall store performance.


Job Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

Education

  • Minimum Grade 10 / NQF Level 3 with one year of related work experience
    OR
  • Grade 12 (Matric) with no work experience required

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to communicate clearly in English and the dominant local language.
  • Basic mathematical skills to perform accurate calculations.
  • Strong customer service attitude with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Physically capable of standing for long periods and performing manual tasks.

Other Requirements

  • Valid South African ID or work permit.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and take initiative.
