A vacancy is currently available for a General Worker in the Conservation Department at Addo Elephant National Park. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who enjoy outdoor work, conservation activities, and hands-on tasks that support environmental protection and park maintenance.
The successful candidate will report to the Sergeant Ranger and assist with daily conservation, maintenance, and operational duties within the park. Please note that this position does not include accommodation or transport, so the successful applicant must arrange their own.
📍 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the following:
- Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- 1–2 years’ experience working as a General Worker or in a similar role
- Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety practices
- Numeracy skills are essential
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment
Added advantages (not compulsory but beneficial):
- Chainsaw competency
- Brush cutter competency
- Short course in landscaping
- Experience working with machinery and equipment
🛠️ MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The General Worker will assist with a variety of tasks that support the conservation and maintenance of the park, including:
🌿 General Cleaning and Grounds Maintenance
- Remove rubbish and keep the work area clean
- Maintain the neatness of grounds within assigned sections
- Perform terrain work and basic gardening
- Clean toilets, picnic areas, offices, and surrounding facilities
- Ensure all areas meet the required cleanliness standards
🔧 Maintenance and Infrastructure Support
- Assist with maintenance of water systems such as:
- Reservoirs
- Pumps
- Drainage lines
- Boardwalks
- Help with routine maintenance of buildings and infrastructure
- Support maintenance of fences, roads, trails, and machinery
- Perform manual labour as required
⚙️ Technical and Fieldwork Support
- Perform technical tasks within ability such as:
- Painting
- Plumbing
- Basic electrical work
- Welding
- Carpentry
- Clean and maintain tools and equipment used during fieldwork
- Report faults or maintenance issues to management
🐘 Conservation Support Activities
- Assist with wildlife monitoring activities
- Assist with game capture operations when required
- Support alien plant control programmes
- Help with soil erosion prevention projects
- Participate in land rehabilitation initiatives
🔥 Fire and Emergency Management
- Assist with fire management activities
- Support emergency response efforts
- Follow safety procedures during incidents
📋 Administrative and Routine Tasks
- Check maintenance book daily
- Complete inspection checklists
- Perform ad-hoc duties when required
- Ensure Occupational Health and Safety practices are followed at all times
💰 REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS
The salary package is based on:
- Paterson Grade A3 salary scale
- Includes allowances and benefits
- Structured according to the HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Service of SANParks
