The Gauteng Department of Health is recruiting a committed and detail‑oriented General Assistant for the Asset Directorate at Wits Oral Health Centre. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring proper management, tracking, and control of government assets, supporting smooth healthcare operations and compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Purpose of the Role
The General Assistant will support the department by ensuring accurate asset verification, tracking, barcoding, inventory updates, and compliance with PFMA‑aligned asset management procedures. The role strengthens accountability, prevents asset loss, supports auditing readiness, and ensures equipment is accurately recorded, safeguarded, and disposed of correctly when needed.
Key Duties & Responsibilities (Expanded & SEO‑Optimized)
The responsibilities of the General Assistant include, but are not limited to:
1. Asset Verification & Physical Audits
You will support the department’s asset verification programme through:
- Physically identifying, scanning, and mapping assets within the facility.
- Verifying asset condition, availability, location, and tagging status.
- Updating asset listings during quarterly or annual audits.
- Assisting auditors during inspections and verification processes.
Accurate verification ensures alignment between the physical asset inventory and the asset register, supporting PFMA compliance.
2. Barcoding, Tagging & System Updating
- Attach barcode labels to all new assets received.
- Ensure asset descriptions, serial numbers, values, and cost centres are captured correctly.
- Maintain updated records in asset registers or digital systems.
- Monitor missing, damaged, or untagged items and report discrepancies promptly.
This prevents asset loss and strengthens control measures.
3. Asset Disposal Support
- Assist in identifying redundant, broken, obsolete, or non‑functional assets.
- Prepare storage areas for disposed items.
- Support disposal committees with necessary documentation.
- Ensure disposal processes align with departmental procedures and PFMA guidelines.
Proper disposal prevents fraud, misuse, and unnecessary storage costs.
4. Equipment Movement, Stock Control & Logistics
- Assist with receiving newly purchased assets.
- Support the movement of equipment between departments or storage areas.
- Help issue assets to departments and record transfers.
- Maintain neat and organised storage rooms.
This ensures accountability for every item purchased with public funds.
5. Loss Control Support
- Report missing, stolen, or damaged assets immediately.
- Assist with completing forms and documentation for loss cases.
- Support investigations and provide correct asset details to the Loss Control Unit.
This reinforces transparency and proper incident management.
6. Compliance & Policy Alignment
Ensure all asset‑related activities comply with:
- PFMA (Public Finance Management Act)
- Treasury Regulations
- Department of Health policies
- Internal audit and risk management guidelines
Following proper procedures strengthens governance and audit readiness.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Mandatory Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
- Computer literacy (especially MS Excel and MS Office Suite)
Added Advantages

- Basic knowledge of Asset Management processes
- Experience working with asset tracking, verification, or logistics
