GENERAL ASSISTANT – SOSHANGUVE INDUSTRIAL (EXTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY)

A leading retail and wholesale business is seeking a hardworking, reliable, and customer‑focused General Assistant for the Soshanguve Industrial branch. This role is essential in ensuring excellent customer service, proper merchandising, effective stock presentation, accurate shelf labelling, and maintaining a clean and safe store environment.

The General Assistant plays a frontline role in daily store operations, ensuring customers enjoy a smooth, efficient, and welcoming shopping experience.


Purpose of the Role

The General Assistant supports the operational effectiveness of the store by:

  • Delivering excellent customer service
  • Merchandising stock according to store layout and planograms
  • Maintaining correct pricing and signage
  • Ensuring high housekeeping standards
  • Preventing stock loss through accuracy and good practice
  • Supporting OHSA-compliant safety processes

This role requires energy, accuracy, customer‑first thinking, discipline, and the ability to work in a fast‑paced retail environment.


Key Responsibilities 


1. Customer Service Excellence

Customer satisfaction is central to this role.

You will:

  • Assist customers with product information and advise them on suitable options
  • Resolve customer queries professionally and efficiently
  • Maintain a friendly and approachable environment in your aisle
  • Ensure customers can move freely and safely within the store

High‑quality customer service strengthens store reputation and increases return visits.


2. Merchandising & Stock Presentation

As a General Assistant, you are responsible for ensuring that merchandise is:

  • Packed according to store layout and planograms
  • Neatly arranged, easy to access, and attractively displayed
  • Rotated and maintained to prevent expired or damaged goods
  • Kept in correct locations for customer convenience

Additional merchandising duties include:

  • Safe stacking of bulk stock
  • Replenishing shelves as soon as stock is received
  • Ensuring promotional displays are clean and accurate
  • Checking stock expiry dates and reporting damage

3. Shelf Price Labelling

Accurate pricing builds customer trust.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring shelf prices match system pricing
  • Replacing incorrect or missing labels
  • Ensuring all display items have visible, accurate shelf tags

4. Housekeeping & Store Cleanliness

Maintaining a safe and clean environment is essential.

You will:

  • Keep your aisle free of obstacles and hazards
  • Ensure immediate cleanup and packing of stock after receiving
  • Complete store checklists (Canteen, Toilets/Showers schedules)
  • Maintain general cleanliness to support a positive store image

5. Safety & OHSA Compliance

Safety is non‑negotiable.

You will:

  • Follow OHSA (Occupational Health & Safety Act) guidelines
  • Wear safety gear in required areas
  • Ensure stock is merchandised in a safe manner
  • Report any hazards or risks to the Store Manager
  • Protect customers and colleagues from accidents caused by unsafe stock handling

6. Stock Loss Prevention

Preventing loss saves costs and improves profitability.

Tasks include:

  • Reporting damaged stock immediately
  • Ensuring correct stock rotation
  • Ensuring products are safely handled and displayed
  • Reporting any discrepancies or suspicious activity

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following:


Educational Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 10 (NQF 3) with 1 year work-related experience OR
  • Grade 12 with no experience

Documentation

  • Valid South African ID OR legal work permit

Language Skills

  • Ability to communicate in English
  • Ability to speak the dominant local language in Soshanguve

Numeric Skills

  • Ability to perform basic calculations accurately

Work Requirements

  • Willing to work shifts, weekends & public holidays
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to lift, move, or handle stock
