About the Role
The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) seeks passionate and community-driven individuals to serve as Independent Correctional Centre Visitors (ICCVs). These positions are critical to safeguarding inmate rights, monitoring prison conditions, and ensuring correctional facilities operate transparently and in accordance with the law.
As an ICCV, you will visit assigned correctional centres daily, engage directly with inmates and Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officials, and report on matters affecting human rights and detention standards.

Minimum Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 / Senior Certificate
- Computer Skills: Proficient computer literacy with high accuracy
- Community Nomination: A recommendation letter from a recognised community organisation (issued within the last six months) is mandatory
- Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Assertiveness, emotional resilience, and ability to work under pressure
- Teamwork and the ability to work independently
- Understanding of Batho Pele principles
- Driver’s Licence: Advantageous
- Residency: Preference for candidates living near the respective correctional centre
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Monitoring & Oversight
- Conduct daily visits to the assigned correctional centre
- Engage with inmates to record complaints, grievances, and rights-related concerns
- Monitor incarceration conditions and report any deviation from human rights standards
Case Reporting
- Record and submit regular reports on:
- Deaths in custody
- Use of segregation
- Application of mechanical restraints
- Any incidents involving use of force
- Support JICS officials during formal inspections and investigations
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build cooperative working relationships with DCS officials, inmates, and relevant community bodies
- Ensure timely escalation of urgent matters
Record Management
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records of all visits, interactions, and findings
- Ensure reports are submitted in line with JICS guidelines and deadlines
