Spray Operators play a critical frontline role, working directly with households and communities to reduce malaria transmission through Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and other preventative measures. This is more than a job – it’s a public health mission that saves lives.
Position Details
- Position Title: Temporary Malaria Spray Operator
- Number of Posts: 350
- Type of Employment: Temporary (seasonal work)
- Duration: 132 working days
- Daily Stipend: R310.00 per day
- Work Location: Various districts in Limpopo, including Mopani, Vhembe, Waterberg, Sekhukhune, and Capricorn
Purpose of the Position
Spray Operators are responsible for carrying out malaria prevention activities, including the mixing and application of insecticides, safe handling of chemicals, environmental and community surveillance, and ensuring accurate reporting. The role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to public health and safety.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following:
- Education: Minimum of Grade 12 / Matric Certificate or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
- Skills: Basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
- Physical Requirements: Must be physically fit and able to carry a malaria spray can for extended periods and move furniture during spraying operations.
- Chemical Handling: Ability to work safely with insecticides and other control agents.
- Eligibility: Applicants must be South African citizens, residents of Limpopo Province, and available for the full duration of the programme.

Key Performance Areas
Spray Operators will be required to perform the following duties:
1. Insecticide Preparation and Application
- Mix insecticides accurately and safely according to standard operating procedures.
- Conduct indoor residual spraying (IRS) within allocated areas, ensuring correct dosage and coverage.
- Handle, maintain, and clean spraying equipment to ensure operational readiness.
2. Operational Support and Logistics
- Load and offload spraying equipment, insecticides, and other goods as required.
- Assist in moving household items and covering furniture before spraying to prevent contamination.
- Clean and maintain malaria control stations, including vehicles, cans, buildings, and surrounding areas.
3. Data Collection and Reporting
- Accurately complete spray and hut cards (SP1) during operations.
- Collect and capture data related to spraying activities for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
- Provide feedback to supervisors on progress, challenges, and observations in the field.
4. Environmental and Community Surveillance
- Conduct environmental inspections to identify breeding sites and risk areas.
- Engage communities respectfully to promote understanding of malaria prevention measures.
- Report unusual findings or health risks to supervisors for follow-up action.
