Joburg Metrobus is inviting applications for seven Breakdown Crew vacancies. Purpose of the Role
The Breakdown Crew ensures the safe recovery and transportation of out-of-service Metrobus vehicles to designated depots or mechanical workshops. Members of this team respond rapidly to roadside breakdowns, carry out basic repairs on-site, and support towing and recovery operations to minimise disruption to bus services.
Key Responsibilities
Breakdown and Towing Services
- Respond promptly to calls for roadside assistance, accurately identifying the nature and location of breakdowns.
- Diagnose problems and carry out minor on-site repairs, including:
- Reconnecting loose parts or wires.
- Jump-starting dead batteries.
- Inflating or changing tyres.
- Replacing basic components such as spark plugs.
- Safely strap, connect, and tow buses to depots or repair facilities using specialised tow trucks and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with all road safety regulations and company policies while towing.
- Dismantle or salvage bus components as required, using hand tools to remove or cut damaged parts.
Operational Support and Communication
- Provide regular updates to dispatch and maintenance teams regarding incident status and estimated arrival times.
- Complete accurate records of breakdowns, repairs, and towing activities, updating files and logs as required.
- Support maintenance teams by reporting recurring faults and recommending improvements to reduce breakdown incidents.
Equipment and Vehicle Care
- Maintain tow trucks and recovery tools in good working condition, conducting regular checks and reporting defects promptly.
- Ensure all towing and safety equipment is clean, secure, and available for use at all times.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following to be considered:
- Education: Matric / Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent (NQF Level 4).
- Driver’s Licence: Valid Code C, EC1 (04), or EC licence.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant functional experience, including at least 6 months working with breakdown tools and towing equipment.
- Health: Physically fit to manage vehicle recovery tasks.
- Clean Record: No criminal record.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining breakdown and towing equipment.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to perform minor repairs.
- Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess situations quickly and act decisively.
- Strong communication and customer service abilities to engage with supervisors, colleagues, and sometimes passengers.
- Time management and ability to work under pressure, including after-hours or on weekends when required.
