Mokala National Park, located near Kimberley in the Northern Cape, is home to rich biodiversity and plays a crucial role in conservation efforts.

As part of our commitment to protecting ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and safeguarding people and resources, SANParks is seeking to appoint three (3) Armed Field Guards on a fixed-term contract basis. This role forms part of our ongoing Biodiversity Social Project (BSP), designed to support conservation while creating meaningful work opportunities.


Purpose of the Role

The Armed Field Guard plays a critical security and conservation function within Mokala National Park. The successful candidates will be responsible for protecting biodiversity, safeguarding park integrity, and supporting anti-poaching initiatives through routine patrols and law enforcement. This position demands individuals who are disciplined, physically fit, and passionate about conservation while ensuring the safety of participants, teams, and park assets.


Key Responsibilities

The Armed Field Guards will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Patrolling and Protection

  • Conduct routine patrols on foot and by vehicle within assigned zones.
  • Guard and safeguard teams consisting of up to 12 participants engaged in fieldwork.
  • Assist with integrity management of the park by identifying and reporting threats.

Law Enforcement and Anti-Poaching

  • Support and execute anti-poaching operations as per SANParks directives.
  • Enforce compliance with environmental and conservation laws, including NEMA provisions.
  • Maintain discipline, law, and order in assigned areas of responsibility.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Keep accurate, detailed, and up-to-date records of all incidents, sightings, and patrol outcomes.
  • Report irregular activities or suspected environmental crimes to supervisors.

Conservation Support

  • Assist with alien plant control, resource monitoring, and other conservation-related projects.
  • Support biodiversity management initiatives and ensure alignment with SANParks conservation priorities.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: Grade 12 / Senior Certificate (Essential).
  • Training: Basic Field Ranger Course completed (Essential).
  • Firearm Competency: Certification in Self-Loading Rifle competency (Unit Standards 117705, 119650, and 123511) (Essential).
  • Security Clearance: Valid SAPS Clearance Certificate confirming no criminal record.
  • Residency: Proof of residence (Essential; preference for applicants from surrounding communities).
  • Fitness: Medical Certificate of Fitness confirming ability to work in demanding physical conditions.
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Basic understanding of Field Ranger duties (preferably with prior experience).
    • Knowledge of Health & Safety principles (Level 1).
    • Ability to work long, extended patrols in challenging environments.
    • Strong discipline, teamwork, and integrity.
    • Passion for conservation, biodiversity, and community engagement.
  • Other: Valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
