About SANParks and the Biodiversity Social Projects Programme
The South African National Parks (SANParks) is the custodian of South Africa’s protected areas and natural heritage. As part of its mission to conserve biodiversity and provide employment opportunities, SANParks implements the Biodiversity Social Projects (BSP) Environmental Monitor Programme under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
The programme provides community members with opportunities to gain valuable work experience while contributing to the protection and management of South Africa’s unique natural resources.
The Agulhas National Park, located at the southernmost tip of Africa, forms part of this initiative and now seeks to appoint three (3) Semi-Skilled Environmental Monitors on fixed-term contracts.
Purpose of the Role
The Environmental Monitor role provides vital support to conservation management and environmental protection within Agulhas National Park. The successful candidates will assist with ecological monitoring, infrastructure support, alien plant clearing, fire management, and environmental awareness programmes.
This position offers a valuable opportunity for individuals passionate about conservation to contribute meaningfully to biodiversity protection while gaining hands-on fieldwork experience.
Key Responsibilities
The successful Environmental Monitors will be required to:
Field and Infrastructure Support
- Assist with the management and upkeep of tools, equipment, herbicides, vehicles, and infrastructure.
- Support stock control, asset management, and fence integrity monitoring, including maintenance and clearing around camps.
- Carry out waste management activities, record reports, and support conservation waste reduction initiatives.
Ecological Monitoring and Restoration
- Assist with ecological monitoring and the recording of resource management data.
- Support invasive alien plant clearing and ecological restoration activities.
- Participate in fire management operations as directed by supervisors.
Administration and Reporting
- Maintain accurate in-field administration including timesheets, H&S checklists, logbooks, and reports.
- Assist in the collation and submission of monitoring records and operational reports.
Community and Awareness Programmes
- Support and participate in environmental awareness and education programmes with local communities.
- Assist with conflict resolution and provide support and motivation to contractors and fellow team members.
General Duties
- Undertake ad-hoc duties when required to support park operations.
- Comply with SANParks policies, procedures, and health & safety requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Education: Grade 12 / NCV Level 4 / Standard 10 (Essential).
- Health: Must be in good physical health and capable of performing field duties (medical fitness examination required).
- Experience/Skills:
- Interest in working in a nature conservation environment.
- Basic understanding of Health & Safety principles.
- Good communication skills (verbal and written).
- Computer literacy (advantageous).
- Basic Firefighting training (advantageous).
- Legal and Integrity Requirements:
- No criminal record (SAPS verification will be conducted).
- Proof of residence (Essential).
- Other:
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours.
- Preference will be given to applicants aged between 18–35 years in line with EPWP objectives.

Please note: The successful candidates will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation and transport as no official accommodation is provided by the park.
