Purpose of the Role

The Cleaner plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, order, and overall hygiene of the South African Police Service (SAPS) premises. This position is essential to ensuring that all employees and visitors operate within a safe, sanitary, and organized environment. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of cleaning and maintenance duties to support the effective functioning of SAPS facilities.

A clean and hygienic workspace enhances productivity, promotes health and safety, and reflects the high standards of professionalism upheld by SAPS. Therefore, the individual appointed to this role will directly contribute to the efficiency and positive image of the Service.


Key Responsibilities

1. Cleaning and Sanitation

  • Perform general cleaning duties in and around SAPS offices, ensuring all areas are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish floors, furniture, and fixtures daily.
  • Clean restrooms, including toilets, basins, mirrors, and tiled surfaces; restock supplies such as toilet paper, soap, and hand towels.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen and dining areas, including tables, sinks, and appliances.
  • Wash windows, walls, and doors as required to maintain an orderly appearance.
  • Empty trash bins, remove waste, and dispose of garbage safely and appropriately.

2. Maintenance Support

  • Identify and report any maintenance or repair needs (e.g., leaks, broken equipment, damaged furniture) to the supervisor promptly.
  • Assist with rearranging or moving furniture and equipment when required.
  • Ensure cleaning materials and tools are handled and stored properly to prevent loss or misuse.
  • Follow occupational health and safety protocols to minimize hazards in the workplace.

3. Operational Assistance

  • Support the Supply Chain Management unit with routine office upkeep tasks.
  • Assist in preparing venues for meetings, training, or official events when requested.
  • Ensure that the exterior premises (entrances, walkways, and parking areas) remain neat and free of litter.
  • Participate in occasional deep-cleaning and spring-cleaning projects.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management in line with operational needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 10 qualification or equivalent (Grade 12/Matric will be an advantage).
  • Skills: Basic literacy, numeracy, and communication skills — ability to read, write, and follow instructions.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a cleaner or in a similar role will be advantageous but is not mandatory.
  • Equipment Handling: Ability to operate elementary cleaning machines and tools (e.g., vacuum cleaners, polishers, mops, and buckets).
  • Availability: Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends and public holidays, when operationally required.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.

  • Basic cleaning methods and hygiene principles.
  • Safe handling and storage of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Health and Safety regulations in a workplace setting.
  • Procedures for waste management and sanitation.

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily at the SAPS Head Office in Pretoria within administrative and operational environments.

  • Cleaners may occasionally be rotated between divisions to meet operational requirements.
  • All employees must adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and COVID-19 hygiene protocols where applicable.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Salary: R138 486 per annum (Salary Level 02, per DPSA salary structure).
