AVBOB is currently recruiting four experienced and professional Long-Distance Drivers to join its team. These positions are critical to the successful and dignified transportation of human remains across South Africa and neighbouring countries.


Purpose of the Role

The Long-Distance Driver will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and respectful transportation of human remains between AVBOB agencies, hospitals, mortuaries, and border points. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, reliability, emotional maturity, and excellent driving expertise, ensuring that all assignments are completed in line with company policies, safety standards, and cross-border regulations.

This role requires strict adherence to road safety laws, time-sensitive delivery schedules, and high ethical standards, given the sensitive nature of the services provided.


Key Responsibilities

1. Safe and Efficient Transportation

  • Drive long distances to collect and deliver human remains across South Africa and neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.
  • Plan and execute assigned trips in accordance with pre-approved routes and company schedules.
  • Ensure that the dignity of the deceased is upheld at all times during collection, transportation, and handover.
  • Operate vehicles in compliance with national traffic laws and cross-border regulations, including customs and immigration procedures.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate completion of all scheduled collections and deliveries, minimizing delays and route deviations.

2. Vehicle Maintenance and Record Keeping

  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after each trip, checking tyres, brakes, oil, water, and fuel levels to ensure roadworthiness.
  • Maintain a vehicle logbook and record all trip details, mileage, refuelling, and delivery documentation accurately.
  • Keep vehicles clean, sanitized, and in pristine condition both inside and out, reflecting AVBOB’s high service standards.
  • Report mechanical faults, accidents, or any operational issues promptly to the Fleet Supervisor or relevant department.
  • Ensure all vehicle maintenance and repair schedules are adhered to and minor issues are addressed proactively.

3. Compliance and Documentation

  • Complete vehicle trip sheets and maintain detailed records for auditing and compliance purposes.
  • Ensure all documentation, including border permits, transport authorizations, and health certificates, are valid and updated before every cross-border trip.
  • Report all traffic offences, fines, or incidents immediately to management.
  • Uphold AVBOB’s internal policies, including safety protocols, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards.

4. Service Excellence and Client Relations

  • Demonstrate compassion, respect, and discretion when interacting with clients, hospitals, mortuaries, and border officials.
  • Maintain a professional image in behaviour, grooming, and communication at all times.
  • Provide regular updates to dispatch or supervisors on delivery status and estimated arrival times.
  • Handle all assignments with sensitivity, ensuring that families and stakeholders experience AVBOB’s values of empathy and care.

5. Team Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

  • Work collaboratively with the Fleet Department, Funeral Coordinators, and Branch Managers to achieve operational goals.
  • Participate in team briefings, safety meetings, and refresher driving courses as required.
  • Demonstrate willingness to assist colleagues and take on additional tasks during high-demand periods.
  • Uphold AVBOB’s brand reputation through reliable performance and continuous commitment to service excellence.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a long-distance driver, preferably in the funeral service or logistics sector.
  • Proven track record of safe driving and compliance with road transport laws.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid South African Driver’s License (Code 10 / EC).
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) – mandatory for passenger and cross-border transport.
  • Cross-border driving experience will be a strong advantage.

Knowledge and Skills

Technical Skills

  • Excellent driving skills and in-depth knowledge of South African road networks and neighbouring country routes.
  • Ability to perform routine vehicle checks and minor mechanical maintenance.
  • Familiarity with logbook management, route planning, and navigation tools (GPS).
  • Sound understanding of road traffic laws, cross-border regulations, and customs procedures.
