Purpose of the Role

The Packaging Operator plays a crucial role within the brewery’s supply chain by ensuring that the packaging process operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with quality standards.

This position involves operating, maintaining, and monitoring defined packaging equipment and associated processes to achieve maximum performance and productivity while ensuring compliance with safety, hygiene, and environmental standards.

The successful candidate will contribute to continuous improvement efforts, teamwork, and operational excellence, supporting SAB’s mission of delivering top-quality beverages to customers and consumers nationwide.


Key Responsibilities

1. Equipment Operation and Process Management

  • Safely operate packaging equipment, including manual and automated machines, in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Interpret and execute the daily production plan for assigned shifts.
  • Set up, monitor, and adjust machines to optimize efficiency and ensure consistent product quality.
  • Identify deviations, malfunctions, or abnormalities in the packaging process and implement corrective actions promptly.
  • Work closely with maintenance teams to report equipment faults, assist with breakdown resolution, and support preventive maintenance programs.

2. Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Monitor product quality throughout the packaging process to ensure adherence to SAB and AB InBev quality standards.
  • Conduct routine quality checks and complete documentation accurately.
  • Ensure all hygiene and food safety standards are maintained in compliance with relevant regulations, including HACCP and SAB’s internal quality protocols.
  • Maintain traceability and product integrity through accurate labeling, coding, and packaging.

3. Performance and Continuous Improvement

  • Manage Packaging Information Management Systems (PIMS) and Packaging Operations Management Systems (POMS) effectively to capture real-time performance data.
  • Analyze data to identify negative trends and take corrective action in collaboration with the shift team.
  • Contribute to performance reviews, problem-solving initiatives, and continuous improvement projects aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, and optimizing line performance.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of AB InBev’s Operational Excellence Programs, including 5S, Kaizen, and Lean Manufacturing initiatives.

4. Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities

  • Complete all administrative and reporting duties accurately and on time, including production logs, downtime analysis, and shift reports.
  • Use and interpret OFRs (Operator Fault Reports) to document issues and corrective measures taken.
  • Support the preparation of AB Reports and other production-related documentation as required by management.

5. Health, Safety, and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Ensure and maintain a safe and healthy work environment in accordance with SAB’s Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) standards.
  • Adhere to all health and safety procedures, reporting hazards or incidents immediately.
  • Participate in safety training programs and initiatives that reinforce a culture of zero harm.
  • Promote and uphold SAB’s safety values by acting as a role model to colleagues and fostering safe work practices at all times.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the Packaging Operator position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) qualification or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 9 months of on-the-job training in a production or packaging environment.
  • Successful completion of the SKAP (Skills and Knowledge Application Program) within 12 months of appointment.
  • Prior experience in an FMCG packaging environment will be an advantage.
  • Basic mechanical and technical aptitude, with the ability to troubleshoot minor issues.
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to use digital monitoring systems (PIMS/POMS).
  • Understanding of health, safety, and food safety regulations.

Core Competencies and Skills

Technical and Operational Skills:

  • Understanding of packaging line operations and machine functionality.
  • Ability to monitor and interpret production data.
  • Familiarity with performance tracking and loss analysis systems.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for machine setup and adjustments.

Work Environment and Conditions

  • The position requires working in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment.
  • Must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as part of a 24-hour operation.
  • The role may involve standing for extended periods, exposure to noise, and handling light mechanical tools.
  • Safety gear (PPE) and hygiene standards must be maintained at all times.
