Introduction

The Department of Defence (DoD), through the South African Army, invites suitably qualified and unemployed South African citizens to apply for twenty-three (23) Cleaner vacancies available across several military bases nationwide. These are entry-level government positions designed for individuals with an ABET qualification who are eager to begin a stable career in the public service.

The Department of Defence plays a crucial role in safeguarding the sovereignty of South Africa and maintaining national security. It contributes to peacekeeping missions on the African continent while ensuring that its internal operations remain efficient and professional. Through these Cleaner positions, the Department seeks to promote cleanliness, hygiene, and order within military bases, thereby contributing to the overall operational readiness of the South African Army.


Job Purpose

To provide effective and efficient cleaning services within designated areas of the Department of Defence in accordance with prescribed hygiene standards, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, and departmental policies.

The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment to support the smooth functioning of military bases and administrative offices.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will perform a range of cleaning and housekeeping tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting all designated office areas, corridors, and common spaces.
  • Cleaning kitchens, dining halls, toilets, ablution blocks, and conference rooms to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination.
  • Washing windows, walls, and cleaning cutlery, dishes, and equipment as needed.
  • Emptying waste bins, sorting recyclables, and maintaining general tidiness in and around the premises.
  • Safeguarding and maintaining cleaning materials, tools, and equipment; reporting any faults or damages to the supervisor immediately.
  • Applying health and safety measures in the execution of duties, ensuring adherence to OHS guidelines and departmental protocols.
  • Assisting with the replenishment of hygiene supplies, such as soap, paper towels, and disinfectants.
  • Supporting colleagues and management in maintaining a professional and orderly work environment.
  • Performing ad hoc cleaning tasks as requested by supervisors or officers in charge.

Minimum Requirements

  • Educational Qualification: ABET Certificate (minimum requirement).
  • Experience: No prior work experience required – ideal for first-time job seekers.

Successful candidates will be placed at various military bases across South Africa. Work involves regular physical activity, handling cleaning materials and equipment, and maintaining hygiene standards in office, accommodation, and operational environments. The position may require working shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
