Introduction

The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality invites suitably qualified and physically capable individuals to apply for the position of General Worker (Grass Cutting and Environmental Maintenance). These positions form part of the City’s commitment to maintaining clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing public spaces across Tshwane.

The successful candidates will play a key role in ensuring that parks, open spaces, traffic islands, cemeteries, and other municipal facilities are properly maintained in line with the City’s environmental management standards. These posts are ideal for hardworking individuals who enjoy outdoor work and wish to contribute to the enhancement of Tshwane’s living environment.


Job Purpose

To provide routine and ad hoc maintenance services across specific sites, facilities, and open spaces in Tshwane. This includes cutting grass, clearing vegetation, and performing general upkeep tasks on both developed and undeveloped land to ensure that all municipal spaces are clean, safe, and visually appealing to the public.

The role supports the City’s mission to create sustainable, livable, and environmentally friendly communities by promoting effective groundskeeping and maintenance practices.


Key Responsibilities

The appointed individuals will be expected to perform the following key duties and responsibilities:

  • Grass Cutting and Vegetation Control
    • Operate brush cutters, lawnmowers, and other cutting tools to trim grass and clear vegetation at designated municipal sites.
    • Maintain lawns and open areas at decorative parks, playgrounds, traffic islands, cemeteries, and recreational facilities.
    • Cut and clear overgrown areas around public amenities such as fire stations, hostels, crèches, old age homes, and municipal offices.
    • Safely operate and maintain all assigned equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and City of Tshwane policies.
  • Site Maintenance and Upkeep
    • Perform general maintenance duties on developed and undeveloped open spaces, including litter collection and removal of debris.
    • Ensure that all tools, machinery, and equipment are kept clean, well-maintained, and stored securely after use.
    • Report damaged, faulty, or unsafe tools and equipment to the immediate supervisor promptly.
    • Assist in preparing work areas and restoring them after maintenance operations.
  • Compliance and Safety
    • Ensure strict adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act No. 85 of 1993) and the City’s internal safety protocols.
    • Wear appropriate protective gear and maintain personal safety at all times while working with equipment or near roadways.
    • Immediately report incidents, injuries, or hazards encountered in the work environment.
  • Team and Operational Support
    • Participate actively as a team member in group maintenance tasks and community improvement projects.
    • Follow instructions from supervisors accurately and complete assigned duties efficiently.
    • Demonstrate accountability, responsibility, and reliability in daily work output and attendance.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Educational Level:
    • Basic literacy with the ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Skills and Experience:
    • Ability to perform physical tasks effectively.
    • Relevant experience operating a brush cutter or lawnmower will be an added advantage.
    • Basic understanding of grass cutting and general maintenance practices.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Must be physically fit and healthy, with no back or mobility problems.
    • Must be willing and able to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays as operationally required.
    • Must undergo a criminal record check and allow fingerprints to be taken by the Tshwane Metro Police Department at own cost.

Remuneration

  • Salary Scale: R166 800 – R200 832 per annum
  • Estimated Remuneration Package: R245 272 – R288 588 per annum (including benefits)

This package is in line with the City of Tshwane’s approved salary structures and conditions of service for employees at job level T2.
