1. Introduction to the Role

The General Worker Grade 1 will contribute to the efficiency of logistical, housekeeping, and support activities across plant and laboratory environments. The successful candidate will work under supervision but must demonstrate initiative, reliability, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety protocols.

2. Purpose of the Job
The purpose of this position is to perform labour-intensive tasks that support research, production, logistics, and general plant operations. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing equipment, facilitating the safe loading and unloading of chemicals and products, maintaining high housekeeping standards, and ensuring consistent adherence to operational and safety requirements. This role ensures that daily operations run smoothly and safely within the Research & Technology division.
3. Key Responsibilities
A. Safety Compliance and Risk Management
Safety is fundamental at Sasol. The General Worker will be expected to:
- Correctly identify and use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Participate in emergency preparedness activities and drills as instructed.
- Conduct routine inspections of safety equipment, reporting defects for maintenance.
- Perform IMS (Integrated Management System) inspections as required.
- Conduct Behavioural Accident Prevention Process (BAPP) observations where applicable.
- Adhere strictly to all SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) requirements, standards, and procedures.
- Maintain high situational awareness and proactively report hazards or unsafe conditions.
These responsibilities ensure the maintenance of a safe working environment for personnel, equipment, and infrastructure.
B. Housekeeping and Operational Cleanliness
Maintaining orderly, hygienic, and hazard-free workspaces is essential for efficient operations. Duties include:
- Cleaning plant areas, benches, floors, PPE, and glassware as instructed or according to routine schedules.
- Keeping storage facilities neat, clean, and organised.
- Safely handling, packing, stacking, and storing chemicals or hazardous materials in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Handling, storing, and transporting gas cylinders safely (where applicable).
- Loading and offloading vehicles and ensuring materials are placed correctly.
- Ensuring continuous cleanliness of allocated areas to meet internal and external compliance standards.
These tasks support operational integrity and ensure a controlled, contamination-free environment.
C. General Support and Operational Assistance
The General Worker provides broad support to supervisors, technical teams, and operational staff. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting dedicated personnel with discipline-specific tasks, ensuring high-quality execution.
- Performing assigned duties accurately and within defined timelines.
- Delivering messages, physical documents, samples, and parcels when required.
- Operating hand tools, basic equipment, or mechanical aids safely and appropriately.
- Safely handling process chemicals and laboratory glassware in adherence with standard operating procedures.
- Working overtime or extended hours when operational demands arise.
- Completing ad hoc tasks and additional responsibilities assigned by senior personnel or the supervisor.
This support plays a key role in keeping workflow efficient and well-coordinated.
4. Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science (compulsory).
Licences and Certifications
- Code EC1 driver’s licence is essential.
- Forklift licence is advantageous and may strengthen the application.
Experience
- At least 1 year of relevant working experience, preferably within a technical, industrial, chemical, or laboratory environment.
