1. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Driver/Messenger plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient, safe, and timely movement of personnel, documents, and materials across various internal and external stakeholders. The role demands a professional individual who is customer-oriented, punctual, highly organized, and familiar with local routes and traffic regulations. As a frontline representative of the organisation, the Driver/Messenger must uphold exceptional standards of service while maintaining confidentiality, reliability, and compliance with company policies.
This position supports operations by delivering essential logistical, administrative, transport, and messenger services. The incumbent engages directly with staff, senior management, external partners, government departments, banks, clients, and VIP passengers. The role also includes basic hospitality tasks, ensuring that all interactions reflect professionalism and the company’s commitment to service excellence.
2. KEY PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
- To provide secure, efficient, and dependable transportation services for staff, visitors, and sensitive materials.
- To support office operations through timely collection, sorting, and delivery of mail, documents, and equipment.
- To represent the company in a professional manner while interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
- To ensure that company vehicles are properly maintained, safe, roadworthy, and compliant with operational standards.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
3.1 Messenger and Delivery Functions
- Collect, distribute, and deliver mail, documents, parcels, and materials to internal departments, external offices, government entities, embassies, banks, and partner organisations.
- Conduct inter-office runs according to established schedules and urgent request protocols.
- Ensure secure handling of confidential, urgent, or sensitive documents.
- Track and record all outgoing and incoming items to maintain accurate documentation.
3.2 Transportation Services
- Transport employees, visitors, VIP clients, and supervisors to various destinations including medical centres, police departments, government offices, banks, and corporate meetings.
- Escort premium passengers with professionalism, courtesy, and adherence to company hospitality and protocol standards.
- Assist in the procurement and transport of heavy equipment and office supplies when required.
- Maintain high levels of customer service in all transport activities, ensuring punctuality and safety.
3.3 Vehicle Maintenance and Operational Efficiency
- Ensure that assigned vehicles are always clean, well-maintained, and compliant with safety and mechanical standards.
- Conduct routine inspections including checking tyres, oil levels, water, brake function, and fuel.
- Report any mechanical issues, damage, or maintenance needs promptly.
- Maintain accurate daily running charts and mileage records.
- Ensure that vehicles are serviced according to schedule and adhere to organisational roadworthiness standards.
3.4 Administrative and Office Support
- Assist with general administrative duties as required by supervisors, including filing, photocopying, handling correspondence, and document organisation.
- Support office staff in day-to-day operations during busy or peak periods.
- Ensure that all administrative tasks are handled efficiently, professionally, and with attention to detail.
- Maintain logs, registers, and records for transport movement, deliveries, and vehicle usage.
3.5 Hospitality and Guest Support
- Welcome visiting guests and provide beverage services where required.
- Support the coordination of guest movement, hospitality needs, and onsite arrangements.
- Ensure high standards of service and courtesy in all interactions with visiting VIPs and staff.
3.6 Compliance and Safety
- Follow all road traffic laws, parking regulations, and safety policies.
- Operate vehicles in a responsible manner to avoid accidents, fines, or delays.
- Uphold company safety protocols at all times.
- Report any safety concerns, hazards, or incidents promptly to supervisors and the Health & Safety representative.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling sensitive information or transporting key personnel.
4. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Minimum Qualifications
- High School Certificate (Grade 12 or international equivalent).
- Valid Driver’s Licence (Code 08 / EB or equivalent).
4.2 Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar Driver or Messenger role.
- Experience working within a corporate, government, airport, or logistics environment is advantageous.
4.3 Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of Johannesburg routes, suburbs, and traffic patterns.
- Excellent driving skills with a clean driving record.
- Understanding of basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of traffic regulations and national road safety laws.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Customer service orientation and ability to interact professionally with individuals at all organisational levels.
- Trustworthy, discreet, and capable of handling confidential materials.
