The Driver role forms part of the Engineering Department and plays a critical part in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant transport operations. Successful applicants will join a high-performance environment that values accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
2. Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the Driver role is to ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of company vehicles to support engineering, operational, and logistical requirements. The incumbent will be responsible for transporting materials, equipment, and personnel as required while adhering strictly to safety standards, traffic regulations, and internal operational procedures. This role supports smooth departmental functioning and contributes to operational excellence within Valterra Platinum’s mining environment.
3. Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
3.1 Safe and Professional Driving
- Operate company vehicles responsibly in accordance with traffic regulations, mine health and safety standards, and Valterra Platinum’s internal procedures.
- Transport loads, equipment, and materials safely between designated locations.
- Ensure all loads are secured correctly and transported in compliance with heavy-duty driving requirements.
- Apply advanced driving techniques, including hazard awareness, defensive driving, and risk-avoidance strategies.
3.2 Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to verify vehicle roadworthiness.
- Monitor fluid levels, tyre condition, brake systems, lights, and vehicle functionality.
- Report defects, potential hazards, or anomalies requiring technical attention to the supervisor or engineering team.
- Assist engineering personnel with routine vehicle maintenance as required.
- Maintain strict adherence to scheduled maintenance plans.
3.3 Operational Support and Documentation
- Follow work instructions and complete required tasks to the expected quality standards.
- Maintain accurate shift logs, vehicle checklists, and trip sheets.
- Ensure administrative documentation related to loads is completed correctly and submitted timeously.
- Comply with all internal administrative and reporting requirements.
- Support engineering and operational teams as required to meet daily objectives.
3.4 Communication and Teamwork
- Maintain effective two-way communication with supervisors and team members.
- Report safety issues, operational challenges, or process deviations immediately.
- Assist with problem solving and contribute to improvements in vehicle utilisation and safe operations.
- Participate actively in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and operational briefings.
3.5 Compliance and Safety
- Strictly adhere to Valterra Platinum’s Zero Harm safety philosophy.
- Follow all safety protocols, including the use of PPE, safe loading procedures, and vehicle operation guidelines.
- Report near misses, incidents, or safety hazards promptly.
- Uphold the company’s values concerning dignity, respect, anti-harassment, and responsible behaviour.
4. Minimum Requirements
4.1 Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) – Essential
- Valid EB / Code 08 driver’s licence – Essential
- Valid Code C1, C, EC1, or EC licence – Essential
- Code 10 licence – Advantageous
- Public Driver’s Permit (PDP) – Advantageous
4.2 Experience
- 1–3 years proven heavy-vehicle driving experience.
- Experience operating vehicles within an industrial, mining, or engineering environment is advantageous.
4.3 Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of traffic laws and heavy-vehicle regulations.
- Ability to apply safe driving techniques, hazard identification, and emergency procedures.
- Competence in load handling and safe material transport.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Capability to work under pressure and remain attentive in fast-paced situations.
- Reliability, accountability, and strong attention to detail.
