Introduction
Eskom Rotek Industries seeks a dependable and safety-conscious Utilityman to provide essential operational support within the Vaal Marine facility. This role involves physically demanding, manual labour tasks that contribute to the smooth functioning of the Bulk Material Handling operations. The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining safe, clean, and efficient workshop conditions through a wide range of unskilled and semi-skilled duties, including lifting, carrying, pushing, moving equipment, and supporting general operational workflows.
This position is ideal for a reliable individual with a strong work ethic, technical aptitude, and a commitment to upholding safety and quality standards within an industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Workshop and Work Area Maintenance
- Maintain a clean, hygienic, and hazard-free workshop environment in compliance with SHEQ, OHSA, and workplace standards.
- Conduct routine housekeeping activities, including cleaning floors, removing waste, organising materials, and ensuring general tidiness to support safe and effective operations.
- Support the safe storage and handling of tools, equipment, and workshop materials.
2. Tools & Equipment Handling
- Assist with the basic handling, cleaning, and organisation of tools and equipment as instructed by supervisors or workshop technicians.
- Ensure proper identification, safe utilisation, and storage of hand tools in accordance with established procedures.
- Report any damaged tools or unsafe equipment to the relevant personnel immediately.
3. SHEQ & Safety Compliance
- Participate actively in daily workshop toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Adhere to all Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality standards and policies.
- Identify potential hazards in the workplace, assist in risk assessments (including HIRAs), and report any deviations promptly.
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other regulatory requirements governing workshop operations.
4. General Assistance to Workshop Operations
- Support workshop teams with general manual labour tasks, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and moving equipment or materials as required.
- Assist in operational tasks such as basic cleaning of workshops, preparation of materials, and minor routine duties.
- Provide assistance during maintenance activities by following instructions and maintaining a safe working posture and awareness.
- Execute ad hoc tasks or operational support activities delegated by supervisors or senior personnel.
5. Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, technicians, and team members to ensure effective workflow.
- Communicate clearly and professionally when reporting hazards, problems, or task updates.
- Contribute to a culture of teamwork, respect, and accountability within the workplace.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate or equivalent.
Experience
- 1 – 2 years of experience within a technical or industrial environment.
- Practical experience and familiarity with cleaning and maintaining workshops is essential.

Technical & Operational Skills
- Ability to correctly identify and utilise tools and basic workshop equipment.
- Practical technical skills and willingness to develop further competence in workshop support duties.
- Basic understanding of workshop cleaning procedures and maintenance standards.

- Strong understanding of basic safety rules, workplace procedures, and hazard awareness.
- Familiarity with OHSA principles and safe work practices.
- Capacity to participate in HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) activities.
