The Gauteng Department of Health invites suitably qualified, committed, and physically fit candidates to apply for ten (10) Ground Maintenance Worker positions within the Johannesburg Health District. These positions fall under the Support Services Directorate and play a critical role in ensuring that public healthcare facilities maintain safe, clean, and well-kept environments in line with Batho Pele Principles, Patients’ Rights, and national service delivery standards.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates with experience or interest in gardening, grounds maintenance, landscaping, property care, and general maintenance services within a public service or institutional environment.


Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of the Ground Maintenance Worker role is to ensure that healthcare facilities, clinics, and surrounding grounds are clean, functional, safe, and aesthetically maintained. The successful candidates will contribute directly to service delivery excellence by maintaining outdoor environments that promote dignity, safety, and well-being for patients, visitors, and staff.

This role supports the Department’s mandate of delivering quality, accessible, and people-centred healthcare services across Gauteng Province.


Key Responsibilities and Duties

The successful candidates will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Grounds and Garden Maintenance

  • Planting, nurturing, and maintaining trees, flower shrubs, lawns, and other plants

  • Preparing soil for planting, including digging, fertilising, and levelling

  • Cutting lawns, trimming edges, pruning trees, and clipping plants

  • Identifying, removing, and controlling weeds and alien plant species

Cleaning and Environmental Upkeep

  • Raking leaves and removing garden waste

  • Keeping pathways, walkways, water channels, and drains clear of obstructions

  • Ensuring parking areas, paved surfaces, gutters, fences, and surrounding structures are clean and tidy

  • Periodic emptying of external refuse bins according to approved schedules

Maintenance Support

  • Assisting with pest control activities where required

  • Checking gardening tools, machinery, and equipment for serviceability

  • Reporting faulty equipment or infrastructure to the Supervisor

  • Assisting with minor maintenance tasks as delegated

Operational Support

  • Loading and offloading gardening materials, tools, and equipment

  • Supporting general property upkeep and facility appearance

  • Assisting with washing of windows and external surfaces

  • Performing any additional duties delegated by the Supervisor in line with operational requirements


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered:

Educational Requirements

  • A minimum of Grade 10 (authentic school report), OR

  • Relevant NQF Level 2 qualification, OR

  • ABET Level 4

Experience

  • Experience in a public service environment, grounds maintenance, gardening, property caretaking, or similar role will be an added advantage

Physical and Work Requirements

  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing manual labour

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including shifts, weekends, and public holidays

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet service delivery demands
