PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The primary purpose of the Driver position is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services in support of healthcare delivery within the Johannesburg Health District. Successful candidates will be responsible for transporting staff, patients, documents, and goods while ensuring full compliance with government transport legislation, safety standards, and departmental policies.
This role is essential to the smooth operation of healthcare facilities, clinics, and administrative units, ensuring that services reach communities effectively and without disruption.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Successful candidates will be required to perform the following duties and responsibilities, in line with departmental policies and legislative frameworks:
Vehicle Operation and Transport Services

Operate government motor vehicles in accordance with road traffic legislation, transport policies, and departmental procedures.

Safely transport staff, patients, medical supplies, and official documents to designated destinations.

Ensure punctuality and adherence to approved schedules and trip authorisations.
-
Work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as required by operational needs.
Vehicle Administration and Compliance
-
Obtain and complete trip authorities prior to all official journeys.

Accurately complete and maintain vehicle logbooks in compliance with legislation and fleet management policies.

Promote the proper handling, safeguarding, and control of state vehicles at all times.

Maintain confidentiality when transporting sensitive information, patients, or official documentation.
Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Support
-
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles.

Check fuel, oil, water levels, tyres, lights, and brakes before departure.

Identify and report mechanical defects or safety issues promptly to the Transport Manager for timely repairs.

Ensure vehicles remain roadworthy, clean, and presentable.
Messenger and Support Functions
-
Perform messenger duties, including delivery and collection of documents, parcels, and medical items.

Provide routine office and registry support services when required.

Assist with loading and offloading of goods and equipment.

Carry out any additional lawful duties delegated by the supervisor in support of departmental operations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet all the following minimum requirements to be considered:
Educational Requirements

A minimum of Grade 10 (authentic school report), OR
-
Relevant NQF Level 2 qualification.
Licensing and Experience
-
A valid Code 10 (C1) driver’s licence.
-
A valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
-
At least five (5) years’ proven driving experience.
-
Experience within the public service environment will be an added advantage.
Knowledge and Skills

Basic knowledge of Government Fleet Management and transport policies.

Understanding of Batho Pele Principles, Patients’ Rights, and the Six Ministerial Priorities.

Excellent time management and scheduling abilities.

Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple tasks.

High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
