About the Role

As a Millwright at Grootegeluk, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and safety of highly technical mining plant equipment. This includes performing mechanical and electrical maintenance, fault‑finding, repairs, and commissioning of circuits, panels, PLCs, and high‑voltage systems.

Successful candidates will demonstrate sound technical judgment, teamwork, strong problem‑solving ability, and a commitment to adhering to South African mining safety legislation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Safety, Legal Compliance & Risk Management

• Adhere to all statutory requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
• Conduct risk assessments before starting tasks and ensure safe working procedures.
• Follow Exxaro safety policies, standards, and PPE requirements without exception.
• Ensure all work is compliant with industry regulations, internal standards, and operational protocols.

2. Maintenance, Repairs & Troubleshooting

• Perform scheduled and unscheduled mechanical and electrical maintenance on mining plant equipment.
• Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain machinery, motors, pumps, valves, drives, and gearboxes.
• Conduct fault‑finding on complex circuits and equipment failures.
• Perform precision repairs to reduce downtime and ensure continuous production.

3. PLC, Panel & Circuit Programming

• Program, configure, and maintain:
  • PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
  • Electrical circuits
  • Control panels
  • Automation equipment
• Interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and panel layouts.
• Ensure compliance with OEM specifications and workshop manuals.

4. Medium- to High-Voltage Switchgear Operations

• Safely operate, maintain, and oversee medium‑voltage and high‑voltage switchgear.
• Validate safe isolation procedures and energization processes.
• Ensure equipment stability, reliability, and compliance with technical standards.

5. Planning, Ordering & Workflow Coordination

• Identify parts, tools, and consumables required for maintenance tasks.
• Assist in planning plant shutdowns and routine maintenance.
• Reduce delays through proactive ordering and inventory control.
• Coordinate maintenance tasks with operators and production teams to minimize downtime.

6. Documentation, Reporting & Job Card Management

• Receive, complete, and return job cards timeously.
• Document faults, repairs, parts used, and job duration accurately.
• Update maintenance logs and assist with root cause analyses where required.

7. Mentorship & Skills Development

• Assist in mentoring artisan aides, apprentices, and trainees.
• Demonstrate technical best practices and promote skill development.

Minimum Requirements

Essential Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Standard 10 (Technical)
• N3 Engineering Certificate (relevant field)
• Trade Test Millwright (MQA / QCTO) – Essential

Experience

• 2–3 years relevant technical and maintenance experience in:
  • Heavy industry
  • Mining
  • Production plants
  • Pyro‑metallurgical environments

Mandatory Requirements

• Psychometric assessment (conducted by Exxaro)
• Certificate of Fitness (issued by Exxaro)
• Valid Public Driver’s License: Code B
• Competency in Medium Voltage Switching
• Completion of Core MQA Module Assessments
• Completion of On‑the‑Job MQA Modules
• Proven experience programming circuits, PLCs, and panels
