The Department of Health is seeking dedicated, reliable, and hardworking Cleaners to join the Primary Health Care Directorate within the Ekurhuleni Health District. This role is critical in supporting the cleanliness, hygiene, and safety standards required in healthcare environments.

Position Overview

We are recruiting six (6) experienced and motivated Cleaners to support various healthcare facilities within the district, including Nokuthela Ngwenya CHC (3 posts), Andries Draditsela Clinic (1 post), Kwa‑Thema CHC (1 post), and Phillip Moyo CHC (1 post).

As a Cleaner in a healthcare setting, you will play an essential role in infection prevention, patient safety, and maintaining a high standard of hygiene across all areas of the facility. You will be responsible for cleaning designated areas, handling waste safely, disinfecting surfaces, and ensuring that the environment remains safe for patients, staff, and visitors.

This position requires a physically fit individual who can cope with the demands of a busy health environment and is willing to work shifts, nights, weekends, and public holidays when required.


Salary Package

R138 486.00 – R163 131.00 per annum
(Plus applicable benefits as per Government regulations)

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this Cleaner position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Educational Requirements

  • AET Level 4 (Standard 7 / Grade 9 report)
    OR
  • Grade 12 (Matric)

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 months relevant cleaning experience, preferably in a hospital, clinic, or similar environment.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to read, write, and understand instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Problem‑solving ability and initiative in the workplace.
  • High level of honesty, professionalism, and reliability.
  • Capacity to handle physical duties such as lifting, bending, and long hours on foot.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy healthcare environment.

Other Requirements

  • Must be willing to rotate between different areas when required.
  • Must be prepared to work night duty, weekends, public holidays, and shifts.
  • Must be committed to maintaining strict hygiene and safety standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

As a Cleaner in the Primary Health Care Directorate, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe, hygienic, and well‑maintained facility at all times. Your duties will include:

1. Cleaning of Interior & Exterior Areas

  • Clean all facility areas including bathrooms, toilets, showers, passages, waiting areas, consulting rooms, offices, and corridors.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, and polish floors.
  • Perform high dusting of walls, windowsills, furniture, and surfaces.
  • Clean doors, windows, staircases, lifts, fire escapes, and other structural areas.

2. Cleaning of Equipment & Appliances

  • Clean medical equipment (non‑clinical surfaces).
  • Wash fridges, microwaves, cupboards, and communal appliances.
  • Clean and sanitize dustbins, waste containers, and other utility items.

3. Laundry Support

  • Assist with laundry duties, including sorting, collecting, and handling linen where required.

4. Waste Handling

  • Remove both general waste and medical waste following strict Health Care Waste Management guidelines.
  • Follow Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols to ensure safe waste disposal.

5. Spill Response & Hygiene Management

  • Immediately clean any spillages, bodily fluids, or contamination hazards.
  • Assist with decontamination and disinfection of surfaces using approved chemicals and protocols.

6. Meal Support

  • Serve meals to patients when required.
  • Wash and properly store utensils.

7. Other Duties

  • Perform any other tasks instructed by supervisors to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Work cooperatively with hospital staff to support healthcare operations.
