OVERVIEW

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) invites young, disciplined, and motivated South African citizens to apply for the Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2027 Intake. The MSDS is a structured two‑year military development programme designed to train, develop, and prepare youth for potential full‑time or contract service in the Army, Air Force, Navy, or Military Health Service.

This programme provides full military training, leadership development, discipline, career exposure, and technical skills across various military environments. Successful candidates will undergo Basic Military Training (BMT), functional training, and specialised development depending on the chosen service branch.


PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME

The MSDS programme aims to equip young South Africans with:

Upon completion, high‑performing candidates may be offered extended contracts or permanent posts, depending on performance and organisational needs.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

During the two‑year MSDS programme, selected candidates will be expected to:

1. Successfully Complete Basic Military Training

  • Participate in physical development training
  • Learn weapon handling and military drills
  • Understand military law, discipline, and ethics
  • Adapt to structured military environments and routines

2. Participate in Functional Military Training

Depending on the service branch, training may include:

  • Combat readiness
  • Aviation operations support
  • Naval safety and seamanship
  • Medical and health support
  • Technical and engineering functions
  • Command and leadership development

3. Uphold Military Standards & Conduct

  • Maintain high levels of discipline
  • Follow all orders and military regulations
  • Represent the SANDF with respect and integrity

4. Participate in Unit Duties & Operational Tasks

  • Assist with military duties assigned by commanding officers
  • Participate in parades, operational exercises, and unit activities
  • Support community development and national task missions

5. Maintain Physical Readiness

  • Attend daily fitness training
  • Meet required Health and Wellness standards

6. Demonstrate Leadership and Teamwork

  • Work effectively as part of a disciplined team
  • Display initiative and a willingness to learn

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for the MSDS 2027 Intake, applicants must meet all of the following:

Citizenship

  • Must be a South African Citizen (RSA ID or proof of citizenship required)

Age Requirements

  • 18–22 years old with Grade 12
  • 18–26 years old with a tertiary qualification

Education Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
  • Post‑matric qualifications (N6, Diploma, Degree) are advantageous

Personal Requirements

  • Must be single (no dependents)
  • Must have no criminal record
  • Must be medically fit for military training
  • Must not be area‑bound (able to relocate anywhere in SA)
  • Must meet specific service branch entry requirements

PROVINCIAL REPRESENTATION (for statistical purposes)

Candidates from all provinces are encouraged to apply, including:

  • Eastern Cape
  • Mpumalanga
