These two (2) Fire Fighter in Training (Maintenance) positions form part of a structured career pathway that can progress from Fire Fighter in Training up to Leading Fire Fighter, based on qualifications, competence, assessments, and Sasol’s Emergency Management Career Path Framework.
This role is best suited for individuals who are committed to public safety, emergency readiness, and continuous physical and technical training.
Purpose of the Job
The Fire Fighter in Training is responsible for protecting Sasol’s people, assets, and legal partners by responding effectively to emergency incidents, industrial fires, rescue operations, and safety‑critical situations. The role ensures preparedness for SHERQ‑related emergencies and contributes to maintaining high safety standards across Sasol operations.
This position requires strong physical fitness, mental resilience, technical aptitude, and a willingness to undergo rigorous training and development.
Key Responsibilities (Expanded & SEO‑Optimized)
As a Fire Fighter in Training (Maintenance), you will be exposed to the full spectrum of industrial emergency response and maintenance operations, including:
1. Emergency Response & Fire Fighting Operations
- Respond promptly to fires, chemical hazards, rescues, and emergency incidents within Sasol sites
- Follow all SHERQ protocols, safety procedures, and command structures
- Execute emergency response duties as per instruction from supervisors or incident commanders
- Apply correct fire‑fighting techniques during real scenarios and simulations
- Ensure safety of team members and plant personnel during emergencies
2. Safety, Health, Environmental, Risk & Quality Compliance
- Apply SHE best practices during all emergency management tasks
- Comply with industrial safety standards, Sasol policies, and emergency guidelines
- Identify risks, report unsafe actions, and promote proactive hazard mitigation
- Participate in safety drills, evaluations, and continuous improvement initiatives
3. Training, Fitness & Professional Development
- Undergo continuous physical and mental fitness training
- Participate in theoretical and practical emergency management training modules
- Engage in Personal Development Plan (PDP) activities
- Ensure readiness for internal assessments and performance evaluations
- Work on developing competencies aligned with Sasol’s Fire Fighter Career Path
4. Maintenance of Fire Fighting Equipment
- Perform maintenance and reconditioning of fire‑fighting equipment
- Service portable fire extinguishers, rescue tools, hoses, and breathing apparatus
- Ensure life support equipment is operational and ready for deployment
- Conduct inspections on fire hydrants, pumps, and industrial fire systems
- Identify faults and propose improvements to maintenance processes
5. Operational Support & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Assist with emergency planning and preparedness activities
- Work closely with all stakeholders including emergency teams, plant personnel, and risk departments
- Support plant housekeeping and ensure working areas remain hazard‑free
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, and toolbox talks
6. Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Suggest improvements for emergency response systems
- Contribute to boosting service delivery and operational readiness
- Support Sasol’s culture of safety innovation and risk reduction
- Give feedback on equipment performance and emergency practices
Minimum Requirements
✔ Education
- Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics (or equivalent technical qualification)
✔ Fitness Requirements
- Must be medically fit according to Sasol Fire‑Fighter Fitness Assessment
- Ability to perform high‑intensity physical activities
Desired Qualifications (Wish List)
These are advantageous but NOT compulsory:
- Fire Fighter 1 & Fire Fighter 2 (NFPA 1001)
- HPCSA Registered BAA (Basic Life Support) / First Aid Level 3
- HPCSA Registered ILS (Intermediate Life Support)
- Hazmat Awareness & Operations (NFPA 1072/472)
