CARE WORKER – NATIONAL RENAL CARE (NRC ARCADIA, PRETORIA)

As part of NRC’s clinical support team, the Care Worker will play a vital role in enhancing the patient experience through hands‑on support, ensuring patient comfort, and maintaining safe and high‑quality dialysis treatment environments.


Purpose of the Role

The Care Worker is responsible for assisting with patient care activities, maintaining the safety and cleanliness of dialysis equipment, supporting clinical staff, and ensuring a comfortable environment for patients undergoing dialysis treatment. This role directly contributes to NRC’s high operational standards and patient‑centric care model.


Key Responsibilities

1. Dialysis Machine Preparation & Infection Control

  • Clean dialysis machines thoroughly before each patient session, in strict accordance with NRC’s clinical standards, infection control procedures, and operational guidelines.
  • Ensure daily cleaning logs and disinfection routines are completed and signed off.
  • Conduct machine alarm tests before each dialysis session to ensure proper function and patient safety.
  • Maintain and restock cleaning materials and disinfectants used in dialysis areas.

These steps are vital in preventing infection, ensuring equipment reliability, and safeguarding patient well‑being.


2. Generator & Equipment Maintenance Support

  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly generator inspections to ensure operational readiness.
  • Log technical issues immediately and report equipment faults to the Unit Manager.
  • Refuel the generator with diesel when required, ensuring uninterrupted power supply during treatments.
  • Assist in maintaining life support and emergency care equipment.

3. Stock, Waste & Financial Control Compliance

  • Comply with NRC financial, stock, and waste policies.
  • Support proper waste segregation and disposal, including medical waste management.
  • Ensure stock is used responsibly and replenished in a timely manner.
  • Assist in routine stock takes and consumable recordings.

4. Patient Support & Customer Service

  • Provide exceptional customer service by offering meals according to dietary requirements and NRC nutrition policies.
  • Attend to basic patient comfort needs during dialysis sessions.
  • Build healthy relationships with patients based on trust, respect, and compassion.
  • Support patient mobility and safety as required.

5. Occupational Health, Safety & Infection Prevention

  • Maintain a safe working environment with strict adherence to OHSA, infection prevention protocols, and NRC standards.
  • Wear appropriate PPE at all times.
  • Report any safety hazards, near‑misses, or non‑compliance issues promptly.
  • Participate in safety drills and continuous improvement initiatives.

6. Personal Development & Professional Conduct

  • Stay updated on healthcare worker responsibilities within the dialysis unit.
  • Participate in training, workshops, and internal development programmes.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following:

Education

  • Grade 12 / Matric (Numeracy and literacy)

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience in a similar care worker or patient support role
  • Experience in renal care is highly advantageous but not mandatory
  • Must be comfortable working in a high‑pressure, fast‑paced clinical environment
