We are looking for a friendly, accurate, and customer-focused Cashier to join our team at a well-established grocery retail store. As a cashier, you will be the final point of contact between the store and the customer, playing a key role in ensuring a smooth and positive shopping experience. Your main responsibilities will involve operating the till, handling various types of payments, maintaining accurate records, and providing exceptional customer service at all times.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, are confident in handling cash, and take pride in delivering high-quality service. You will report directly to the Till Supervisor and will be expected to work across trading and non-trading hours, including weekends, public holidays, and rotating shifts.
Key Responsibilities
As a cashier, your day-to-day duties will include the following:
- Operate an electronic point of sale (POS) system, including a scale, to ring up customer purchases accurately and efficiently.
- Scan or enter product codes, ensuring each item is correctly processed and priced.
- Ensure all payments are handled correctly, whether cash, debit, credit, vouchers, or digital payments, and provide the correct change to customers.
- Balance your cash drawer at the beginning and end of your shift, and report any discrepancies to the Till Supervisor.
- Keep the till area clean, tidy, and hygienic throughout your shift in accordance with health and safety regulations.
- Provide friendly, courteous, and helpful service to every customer, aiming to resolve questions or issues with professionalism and care.
- Maintain a good knowledge of store products, prices, and promotions, enabling you to assist customers and upsell where appropriate.
- Stay updated on all current specials, promotions, discounts, and advertising campaigns.
- Demonstrate strong time management skills, especially during busy periods like month-end or holiday sales.
- Collaborate with team members and management to ensure a smooth front-of-store operation.
- Be alert and proactive in reporting any suspicious behavior or potential theft to supervisors.
- Keep the checkout area organized, including replacing receipt paper, arranging bags, and removing any clutter or waste.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- A valid Matric certificate (Grade 12).
- Prior experience as a cashier, preferably in a grocery or retail setting.
- Ability to communicate clearly and confidently in English (additional local languages a plus).
- Reside within a 25 km radius of the job location, to ensure punctuality and availability.
- Must have a clear criminal record.
Preferred Criteria (Not Mandatory)
Although not required, preference may be given to candidates who meet the following:
- South African citizens.
- 1+ years of experience working in a cashier role.
- Candidates aged between 18 and 65 years old.
- Previous experience with electronic POS systems and working with both cash and digital transactions.
Work Environment and Expectations
- This is a shift-based role, and candidates must be willing to work six shifts per week, including Sundays and Public Holidays.
- You will be expected to stand for long periods and be physically present at your station during peak hours.
- The ability to remain calm and courteous when working under pressure is essential, especially when handling queues or dealing with customer complaints.
