We are currently hiring a dependable and customer-focused General Assistant to join our team at a reputable retail store. As a General Assistant, your role is essential in creating a positive shopping experience for customers by offering assistance, keeping the store clean and well-stocked, and ensuring smooth day-to-day store operations.
This is a shift-based position, and candidates must be willing to work across trading and non-trading hours, including Sundays and Public Holidays. If you are enthusiastic, service-oriented, and eager to contribute to a dynamic retail environment, this position may be a perfect fit for you.
Key Responsibilities
As a General Assistant, your daily responsibilities will include a wide variety of tasks to support customer service and operational excellence:
- Engage with customers in a friendly and professional manner by greeting them warmly, offering assistance, and answering product-related questions.
- Share accurate product information, help customers choose suitable items, and demonstrate how to use them where applicable.
- Proactively inform customers about ongoing sales, special offers, and promotions to enhance their shopping experience.
- Handle customer queries and complaints efficiently, ensuring issues are resolved promptly and customers leave satisfied.
- Process cash and card transactions using a POS (Point of Sale) system, issue receipts, and manage refunds or exchanges following company policy.
- Receive and unpack deliveries, check stock for damage or missing items, and report any discrepancies to the supervisor.
- Assist with stock replenishment, ensuring that shelves and fridges are fully stocked, tidy, and correctly labeled.
- Ensure fast restocking of popular or sold-out items to maintain product availability.
- Assist in routine stock takes and inventory control, helping maintain accurate stock levels and reduce shrinkage.
- Keep store areas including shelves, floors, storage rooms, kitchens, and back-of-house areas clean and organized at all times.
- Properly dispose of store waste and ensure waste is placed in the designated skip bins.
- Comply with all store policies and safety protocols, including emergency procedures and environmental standards.
- Work collaboratively with team members to meet store goals and ensure smooth daily operations.
- Remain alert, professional, and customer-service focused during peak times or high-pressure situations.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the General Assistant position, you must meet the following criteria:
- A valid Matric certificate (Grade 12).
- Relevant experience in a similar position, such as General Assistant, General Worker, or General Clerk.
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Reside within 25km of the store location, ensuring reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Have a clear criminal record to comply with company security and trust standards.
Preferred Attributes (Not Required, but Beneficial)
Candidates who meet these additional preferences may be prioritized:
- South African citizens.
- Candidates between the ages of 18 and 65.
- Experience in a customer-facing retail role, handling point of sale systems, and performing stock-related duties.
Working Conditions
- This role is physically active and involves standing, walking, lifting, and bending throughout your shift.
- You must be able to work varied shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and Public Holidays.
- A neat, presentable appearance and a positive, team-oriented attitude are essential.
