Job Overview

We are looking for a Customer-focused Merchandising & Service Assistant to join our retail team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring excellent in-store customer service, high merchandising standards, and effective stock presentation. You will be responsible for creating a safe, attractive, and organised shopping environment while supporting the store’s operational excellence and customer satisfaction goals.


Key Purpose of the Role

To ensure outstanding customer service, proper merchandising of stock, correct shelf price labelling, and good housekeeping within your designated area of responsibility. You will work closely with customers, store colleagues, and management to maintain high operational and service standards while promoting safety and reducing stock loss.


Minimum Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Minimum Grade 10 (NQF 3) with 1 year of related work experience, OR
  • Grade 12 (Matric) with no related experience.
  • Previous retail or merchandising experience is advantageous.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and the dominant local language.
  • Basic numeracy and ability to perform simple calculations accurately.
  • Customer-focused attitude with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual handling duties.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organisation.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid South African ID or work permit.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) standards.

Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

1. Customer Service Excellence

  • Advise and assist customers in choosing the correct products for their needs.
  • Respond to and resolve customer queries and complaints promptly.
  • Maintain a friendly, helpful, and professional approach at all times.
  • Create a welcoming shopping environment that encourages repeat business.

2. Merchandising Standards

  • Merchandise bulk stock in line with store layout plans and planograms.
  • Ensure shelves and displays are fully stocked, tidy, and visually appealing.
  • Implement promotional displays according to marketing guidelines.
  • Rotate stock to maintain first-in, first-out (FIFO) product movement.

3. Housekeeping & Store Presentation

  • Keep aisles and work areas clear of obstacles to ensure customer and staff safety.
  • Ensure stock is merchandised immediately after being received.
  • Maintain correct shelf price labelling at all times.
  • Complete daily checklists for your area of responsibility.
  • Maintain canteen, toilets, and showers according to the cleaning schedule.

4. Safety & OHSA Compliance

  • Follow all safety gear requirements (e.g., gloves, safety shoes, reflective vests).
  • Ensure all stock in racking and bulk areas is stored securely.
  • Immediately report hazards, damaged fixtures, or unsafe conditions to the Store Manager.
  • Encourage safe movement of customers and staff within your designated area.

5. Stock Loss Prevention

  • Report damaged or expired stock to the Store Manager promptly.
  • Maintain vigilance to identify and prevent potential theft or damage.
  • Follow correct stock-handling procedures to minimise shrinkage.
