Introduction

Dis-Chem Pharmacies, South Africa’s leading retail pharmacy group, is seeking experienced and customer-focused Cashiers to join our in-store team. As a Cashier, you will play a vital role in creating a world-class shopping experience by ensuring smooth, accurate, and efficient point-of-sale (POS) operations. You will be the face of the store at checkout, responsible for processing customer transactions while providing excellent service in line with Dis-Chem’s 5-star communication principles.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with strong numerical skills, proven cashier experience, and a passion for working with people in a fast-paced retail environment.


Minimum Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • At least 6 months’ cashier/till operations experience.
  • Computer literate (MS Office proficiency required).
  • Strong numerical and reconciliation skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language (written and spoken).
  • Customer service experience in a retail environment.
  • Willingness and availability to work retail hours, including weekends, evenings, and public holidays.

Advantageous:

  • Fluency in a third additional language.
  • Previous retail environment experience with POS systems.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

As a Cashier, your responsibilities will include:

Customer Service Excellence

  • Adhere to Dis-Chem’s customer service policies and procedures at all times.
  • Build and maintain a professional relationship with customers, ensuring a welcoming environment at the checkout point.
  • Respond to customer queries and complaints with patience, escalating issues to the Frontline Supervisor or Store Management where necessary.
  • Be knowledgeable about current promotions, sales, and loyalty programmes to effectively assist customers.

Point-of-Sale Operations

  • Accurately record and process all customer purchases on the Dis-Chem operating system.
  • Handle all accepted payment methods: cash, debit/credit cards, gift vouchers, loyalty cards, coupons, and other approved transactions.
  • Ensure correct application of discounts, promotions, and loyalty benefits such as Discovery Health Care, Medihelp Lifestage, Momentum Multiply, Legacy Lifestyle, ABSA Rewards, and eBucks.
  • Process refunds, exchanges, and voids strictly according to SOPs, ensuring supervisor approval where required.
  • Manage daily cash flow by maintaining an accurate till float and ensuring all monies are balanced.

Cash Handling & Security

  • Ensure that all money is securely kept inside the till and that the daily takings are handled confidentially.
  • Place cash into the drop safe at required intervals, following Dis-Chem’s security procedures.
  • Safeguard your login details (code and password), ensuring that no one else uses your credentials.
  • Remain alert to suspicious activity and report potential security risks to management.

Merchandise & Store Support

  • Confirm that all outgoing stock, including OTC products, high-value items, and prescriptions, are scanned and fully paid for.
  • Address customer queries about store products, promotions, and services.
  • Assist with general frontline housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe checkout area.
  • Report damaged products, pricing issues, or discrepancies to management.
