Introduction

The City of Tshwane invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Bus Driver within its Public Transport Services Division. This critical role contributes to the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of commuters across the City’s integrated public transport system.

Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of this role is to transport passengers and commuters via the City’s public transport infrastructure, ensuring their safety, comfort, and timely arrival at destinations. The role requires adherence to traffic laws, operational standards, and customer service excellence.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Educational Qualification: Grade 10 or equivalent.
• Driving Experience: Proven experience in operating heavy vehicles.
• Driver’s Licence: A valid Code C, EC1(04), EC, or C1(04) driver’s licence.
• Professional Driving Permit (PrDP): Mandatory for transporting passengers.
• Criminal Record: No criminal record.
• Physical Requirements: Must be physically fit and medically healthy to meet the demands of professional driving.
• Work Flexibility: Willingness and ability to work shifts, weekends, and overtime as required.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

1. Passenger Transportation

• Safely transport commuters and passengers across designated routes and special assignments.
• Ensure compliance with passenger loading and offloading protocols.
• Maintain a courteous and professional attitude toward passengers at all times.

2. Route & Schedule Compliance

• Follow designated bus routes as per the official schedule.
• Adhere to specific instructions provided by supervisors or dispatch.
• Ensure punctuality to maintain service reliability.

3. Automated Fare Collection (AFC) System Management

• Oversee the proper functioning of the tap in/tap out system.
• Assist passengers with fare card queries and ensure correct usage.
• Report any AFC system malfunctions or irregularities.

4. Safety & Compliance

• Strictly obey all traffic rules in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act 93 of 1996) and any other relevant legislation.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness.
• Report defects, accidents, or incidents immediately to supervisors.
• Ensure that all safety and security measures are observed to protect both passengers and assets.

5. Special Duties

• Perform ad hoc or special duty assignments as required by the City.
• Provide transportation support for official events, emergencies, or other city-mandated activities.

• Physical & Emotional Fitness: Ability to cope with the demands of driving in traffic, dealing with varied passengers, and working long hours.

Working Conditions

• This position is primarily field-based, operating buses across city routes.
• Drivers are expected to work in varying weather conditions and under time constraints.
• Shift work, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and public holidays, will be required.
• Overtime may be requested depending on operational needs.
