Purpose of the Job

The Driver Messenger is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient transport of government officials, staff, and guests, while also providing essential courier and messenger services. The role demands professionalism, integrity, and adherence to government safety and security standards.


Key Responsibilities

Transportation Services

  • Transport government officials, staff members, and visitors to assigned destinations safely, punctually, and courteously.
  • Adhere strictly to all road traffic laws, government security protocols, and occupational safety regulations.
  • Follow designated routes and schedules, adapting as required to ensure timely arrivals.
  • Assist with the loading, unloading, and secure handling of luggage, parcels, and packages.

Vehicle Care and Maintenance

  • Ensure the government vehicle is kept clean, presentable, and in roadworthy condition at all times.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Monitor fuel consumption, tyre condition, mileage, and service schedules.
  • Report mechanical faults, accidents, or irregularities immediately to the responsible supervisor.
  • Arrange servicing, repairs, and routine maintenance in line with departmental policies.

Messenger and Courier Duties

  • Deliver and collect official correspondence, documents, and parcels between offices, departments, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and security when handling sensitive documents or materials.
  • Obtain signatures and proof of delivery where required.
  • Ensure timely dispatch and receipt of items as per departmental guidelines.

Administrative and Record-Keeping

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logbooks, fuel usage reports, mileage records, and delivery logs.
  • Submit documentation and reports as required by the department.
  • Comply with all internal administrative processes and reporting requirements.

Professional Conduct

  • Demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and discretion in all interactions.
  • Provide a welcoming and respectful service experience for all passengers.
  • Uphold the values of integrity, responsibility, and accountability in daily duties.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 10 (NQF Level 2) or higher; Matric (NQF Level 4) advantageous.
  • Driver’s License: Valid Code B (light motor vehicle) or higher; PDP (Professional Driving Permit) may be required.
  • Experience: 1–3 years driving experience in a professional environment (government, corporate, or formal sector preferred).
  • Skills:
    • Strong road safety awareness and defensive driving skills.
    • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge.
    • Ability to follow schedules, routes, and instructions effectively.
    • Sound interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Basic literacy and numeracy (for logs, receipts, and document handling).
  • Other Requirements:
    • Clear criminal record.
    • Physically fit and able to perform manual handling of parcels/bags.
    • High level of integrity and trustworthiness.
